Five mystery movies to watch on Netflix right now
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (Rian Johnson, 2022)
For those craving more of Benoit Blanc, it’s always safe to return to Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which serves as the second instalment in the Knives Out film series. The Netflix mystery thriller is set during the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020 and sees Daniel Craig reprising his role as the acclaimed detective.
In Glass Onion, the co-founder of technology company Alpha, Miles Bron, initiates a murder mystery game at his mansion on a private island in Greece for his close-knit group of friends. But when the harmless game actually ends up taking the life of one of their own, it’s up to Blanc to find the answers and unmask the killer.
Enola Holmes (Harry Bradbeer, 2020)
While the Knives Out franchise is undoubtedly one of the best detective film series Netflix has to offer, the audience shouldn’t forget about Enola Holmes, which is returning with a third movie as well. Although you can fulfil the sleuthing yearnings with the second part as well, if it were up to us, we’d begin right from the start, the 2020 movie starring Millie Bobby Brown and Henry Cavill.
The debut film from the franchise centres on Enola’s travel to London in search of her mother, which eventually turns into a thrilling adventure for the little sleuth. The youngest Holmes sibling joins forces with a runaway lord to solve a mystery that hovers like dark clouds all over the country.
Lost Girls (Liz Garbuz, 2020)
Based on Robert Kolker’s non-fiction book, Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery, Lost Girls is a spine-chilling whodunit, centring on the streak of murders of young female sex workers, whose bodies are found washed up ashore on the South Shore barrier islands of Long Island. The movie begins with a determined mother’s desperate search for her missing daughter on Long Island, which unravels into a larger cobweb of conspiracy.
When law enforcement initially dismisses her daughter as a runaway sex worker, the mother refuses to accept this, launching her own investigation. But if not for her persistence, the trail of deaths and the possibility of a serial killer on the loose would probably never have come to light.
Luckiest Girl Alive (Mike Barker, 2022)
Luckiest Girl Alive is yet another thrilling Netflix adaptation based on Jessica Knoll’s 2015 novel. The mystery movie revolves around Ani FaNelli, a seemingly perfect New Yorker, living the life many can only dream of. Although underneath that blemish-free exterior, she hides a past of trauma, which includes a scarring school shooting and other tragedies during her teenage years, the ghosts of her past come back to haunt her just when her fiancé suggests they relocate to London.
With a documentary filmmaker pushing her to open up about her story, Ani’s newfound reality confronts a threat like never before. While she inevitably has to grapple with what’s coming for her, the complex situation also leaves her with no option but to reflect on whether her perfect life is truly hers or just a well-constructed reality to escape her past.
The Wonder (Sebastián Lelio, 2022)
Based on Emma Donoghue’s 2016 novel, The Wonder is a period psychological drama that tells the story of an English nurse, Lib Wright, who was sent to a remote Irish Village in 1862 to investigate the uncanny case of an 11-year-old girl, Anna O’Donnell. Anna and her family claim that she has survived months without eating any food, solely relying on “manna from heaven.”
Subsequently, as Lib takes on the task of observation with a local nun, she uncovers deep-seated secrets surrounding the community that defy her medical reasoning. Although initially surmised as a supposed miracle, Lib’s investigation also coincides with that of a journalist, leading to a dramatic revelation that combines uncharted aspects of faith and trauma. While The Wonder may not be your usual mystery pick, it definitely stands out.
