Explaining the epic ending of ‘Manifest’ season 4 part 1

Manifest has been a fan-favourite ever since its inception in 2018. Created by Jeff Rake, the show is a gripping narrative about the passengers aboard the Montego Air Flight 828, an aircraft that goes missing for nearly five years. Presumably dead, these passengers come back after going missing for a long time, leading to rising tension- the relationships they return to are no longer the same, and they find it hard to integrate into society after experiencing supernatural “callings”.

The series stars Melissa Roxburgh, Josh Dallas, J.R. Ramirez, Luna Blaise, Athena Karkanis, Daryl Edwards, Matt Long, Jack Messina, Parveen Kaur and Ty Doran, among others. Despite the immense fan following, the show was cancelled in 2021 by NBC, much to the chagrin of fans who were left high and dry with the cliffhanger in the third season. Fortunately, Netflix renewed the show with Warner Bros TV for the fourth season, much to the delight of the creator, Rake.

Rake even hinted at the possibility of a film or a book to pick up from the cliffhanger of season three. In June 2022, he said, “I would love to finish the story and look, I’m going to take some time. I’m going to hold out hope that maybe somebody will step up and help us finish that story.”

Now that the first part of the fourth season of Manifest is streaming on Netflix, it is time that we explore the ten episodes and unpack the ending of the first part, which sees the future of the entire world is at stake and not just of the passengers on Flight 828.

Zeke realises that it is Cal who can save the entire world from their death dates. Cal’s cancer has returned, and he is days away from succumbing to it; Zeke, who has escaped his death date, can absorb Cal’s suffering via his power of empathy and save him.

This leads to a heartbreaking scene where Zeke passes away in Michaela’s arms, days after celebrating their first anniversary. While fans are heartbroken over this, Rake has promised divine communication between the duo in the upcoming episodes during an interview with The Wrap

Without his cancer, Cal is the sole individual who can save the world from the death dates and functions as the Dragon. This leads to an epic showdown between him and Angeline. Angelina, now possessing some fragments of the Omega Sapphire, is powerful and embodies the formidable evil encapsulating the world. While Cal will use his power to save everyone, Angelina might grow more destructive than ever and incite a mayhem of a showdown between her and Cal soon.

The ten episodes end with the passengers of 828 being detained which might make it more difficult for them to save the world from doom. It will be exciting to see how Angelina tries to wreak havoc and the rest try to stop her in the upcoming episodes!

The second part of Manifest season four is scheduled to premiere on June 2nd, 2023 and will bring the series to an end.
