Everything we know about Netflix’s 'Cobra Kai' season 4

Netflix’s Cobra Kai has garnered a massive fan following since its debut, largely due to its compelling premise. With season four on the cards and an exciting new logo, fans are eagerly anticipating the comeback of this Emmy-nominated show on the streaming platform.

Written and produced by the ‘Big 3’, namely Josh Herald, Hayden Schlossberg and Jon Hurwitz, this Karate Kid sequel takes place nearly three decades after the end of the All Valley Karate Tournament in 1984 that spurned the budding enmity between Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence.

Starring Courtney Henggeler, Xolo Mariduena, Tanner Buchanan, Jacob Bertrand, Mary Mouser, Gianni Decenzo, Peyton List, Vanessa Rubio, Oona O’Brien and Dallas Dupree, the series has garnered quite the attention for its high-strung action and quality content.

Ahead of the release of Cobra Kai Season 4, here is everything that we know about it:

Everything we know about Netflix’s Cobra Kai season 4

Has Cobra Kai Season 4 been renewed?

Cobra Kai season four was renewed before the third season premiered on Netflix. The first two seasons of the show were originally released on YouTube Premium. However, the showrunners auctioned the show and Netflix started streaming the two seasons before releasing the third season on January 1, 2021.

Due to the immense popularity of the show, Netflix renewed it yet again for the fourth season.

When will Cobra Kai Season 4 release?

Netflix announced on August 5, 2021, that Cobra Kai Season 4 would be coming to the streamer by the end of this year. The new teaser trailer that premiered did not state the exact release date for the season.

The brand new teaser asks the fans of the show to tighten their belts and “fasten [their] gi” as the fourth season would take them to the “biggest stage where legends are born”. All the main characters walk towards the camera to gear up for the much-awaited All-Valley tournament and they fight for “the soul of the valley”.

How many episodes will there be on Cobra Kai Season 4?

Cobra Kai Season 4 will be having ten episodes in all.

What is the status of the production of Cobra Kai Season 4?

As of now, it is known that Cobra Kai season four concluded filming on April 30, 2021, and is currently in post-production.

Cobra Kai season four began even before Netflix had picked it up for the fourth season due to the immensely positive reactions to the first two seasons. After a gruelling fortnight of writing, the staff had concluded the frameworks for the fourth season which was then polished for filming. Jon Hurwitz confirmed the same in his tweet.

Filming was supposed to begin on January 20, 2021, but got delayed due to unprecedented reasons and began on February 26, 2021, continuing till April 30, 2021.

On Twitter, the first episode name was unveiled to be ‘Let’s Begin’ and is written by Hurwitz, Josh Heald and Hayden Schlossberg.

The cast and crew have shared some updates from the sets.

After they concluded filming, Martin Kove, aka John Kreese, posted a long note on Instagram, praising the “fearless’ crew that “pushed on” amidst the pandemic.

What will possibly occur in Cobra Kai Season 4?

Cobra Kai season four will see the much-awaited 51st All-Valley tournament where Miyagi-do and Eagle Fang dojos will form an alliance against the Cobra Kai. While Samantha and Miguel will represent the alliance, it is most likely that Robby Keene, Tory and Kyler will be seen helming the way for the Cobra Kai.

The ending of season three also formed the premise for Terry Silver’s entry when Kreese calls up his war-veteran friend who is also the infamous founder of the Cobra Kai. Silver will be making his first appearance post-The Karate Kid Part III.

Netflix released Silver’s first look on May 27, 2021, and Griffith has been teasing the same on his social media platforms.

There might be some intense and riveting fight sequences in the fourth season. Hayden Schlossberg teased the same in his tweet that has fuelled the interest of fans who are dying to witness the on-screen magic.

Who are the cast members on Cobra Kai Season 4?

Most of the cast members will reprise their original roles. The most anticipated role will however be the comeback of Thomas Ian Griffith as the notorious Terry Silver.

Fans are worried about the return of Hilary Swank as Julie Pierce.

“In our writers’ room we speak about literally every character that has appeared in the Miyagi-verse, so it’s obvious that we’ve spoken about Julie Pierce,” Hurwitz said.  “As to whether or not she’ll return to the series, that’s something you’ll just have to wait to find out.”

In February 2021, some of the newer additions were announced:

  • Dallas Dupree Young will be seen as Kenny, a bullied outcast who takes refuge in the arms of karate to defend his honour
  • Oona O’Brien as Devon, a competitive and easily-provoked short-tempered karate student with high potential
  • Peyton List and Vanessa Rubio in undeclared roles as series regulars
  • Cuyle Carvin as Bob
  • Chris Schmidt Jr. as Mikey
  • Nick Marini as Twig
  • Soji Arai as Jirou Tanaka
  • Han Soto as Pham Minh Thao

Will Cobra Kai Season 4 have a follow-up season?

Before releasing Cobra Kai season four, Netflix has already renewed the show for a fifth season in August 2021. We have provided information regarding the same here

Hurwitz spoke about the renewal and the plans for the upcoming season(s). “We have plans beyond that. We haven’t had firm discussions with Netflix as to when the series will end but we have expressed that if on their end there is a period of time where they’re like ‘It’s about enough of this Cobra Kai business,’ to give us a heads up so that we can wrap things up appropriately.”

He is confident about the trajectory of the series and said that they “have the right amount of runway to get it done in a way that’s going to be fulfilling for fans and leave the characters in a place that’s a fulfilling close to the story with potential for more stories down the road.”
