Everything we know about Guillermo del Toro's Netflix anthology series

When Guillermo del Toro is no stranger to directing fantasy films and incorporating supernatural elements, known for some brilliant works, namely Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water and Crimson Peak, del Toro has become a huge name. He won both the Best Picture and Best Director awards at the Academy for his brilliant and groundbreaking work on The Shape of the Water

He has a knack for incorporating realism into the darker side of fairy tales and macabre horror and executes his vision brilliantly. When del Toro announced his upcoming anthology horror series, Cabinet of Curiosities, that would be helmed by him and a legion of talented filmmakers handpicked by the maestro, it promised a delightful experience for horror fans. Set to be a star-studded affair under the watchful guidance of the phenomenal filmmaker, the series’ release is closer than we think.  

With his upcoming film Pinocchio scheduled to stream on Netflix in December 2022, the acclaimed filmmaker is definitely having a gala time, managing his projects.

How many episodes will there be? 

Previously, the anthology was said to be a ten-episode series, but later it was revealed that there shall be eight scary episodes. As of now, only a few episode titles are known. They are as follow: 

  • Ep 1- TBA 
  • Ep 2- The Autopsy 
  • Ep 3- Lot 36 
  • Ep 4- TBA
  • Ep 5- TBA
  • Ep 6-  Dreams in The Witch House 
  • Ep 7- Graveyard Rats 
  • Ep 8- Some Other Animal’s Meat

Who is directing the series? 

The series will have eight stories, of which two are original creations by del Toro. These stories include the works of H.P. Lovecraft, Michael Shea, Henry Kuttner, Emily Carrol etc.

He has handpicked a group of talented filmmakers to helm each episode. This group includes the likes of Jennifer Kent, David Prior, Guillermo Navarro, Keith Thomas, Panos Cosmatos, Aaron Stewart Ahn, Vincenzo Natali and Ana Lily Amirpour. 

What is the plot of the series? 

Previously known as Guillermo del Toro Presets 10 After Midnight, Cabinet of Curiosities is set to be “a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror”. They also promise to teem elements from “macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy”.

What is the status of the production of the series? 

Filming commenced back on June 28th, 2021, and was initially scheduled to conclude on February 16th, 2022. However, according to IMDb, filming has already come to an end on January 25th, 2022. The entire anthology has been shot in Toronto, Canada. 

When is it slated to release on Netflix? 

Since filming is said to wrap up by February 2022, the length of the post-production process will help determine the release date. However, Cabinet of Curiosities might be a part of Netflix’s 2022 Halloween lineup.
