Everything we know about Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’

Guillermo del Toro is the master of supernatural and macabre horror. He has curated his legacy via some brilliant works, namely The Shape of Water, Pan’s Labyrinth, Crimson Peak and more. With several awards and accolades to his name, this legendary filmmaker is currently gearing up for his consecutive Netflix productions, Pinocchio and Cabinet of Curiosities.

del Toro announced an anthology project, hand-picking directors who would incorporate realism into the darker supernatural elements and execute his vision. Cabinet of Curiosities promises a legion of talented filmmakers who promise a delightful experience for horror fans.

Set to be a star-studded affair under the watchful guidance of the phenomenal maestro, the series’ release is closer than we think.  del Toro told Collider,  “With Cabinet of Curiosities, we set out to showcase the realities existing outside of our normal world: the anomalies and curiosities. We hand-picked and curated a group of stories and storytellers to deliver these tales, whether they come from outer space, supernatural lore, or simply within our minds.”

When will Cabinet of Curiosities be released? 

After months of eager anticipation, Cabinet of Curiosities will finally premier eon Netflix in October as a part of their Halloween line-up.

The anthology series will have a special four-day release schedule which begins on October 25th, 2022. Every day two new episodes will hit the streamer, starting with October 25th, 2022. The rest of the episodes will drop on October 26th, 27th and 28th, respectively.

How many episodes will Cabinet of Curiosities have?

Cabinet of Curiosities was initially supposed to be a ten-episode series but later went on to have eight episodes. Since the release order has not been declared, the episodes are as follows:

  • ‘Dreams in the Witch House’: The episode will be based on H.P. Lovecraft’s eponymous story and will be directed by Catherine Hardwicke, based on Mika Watkins’ screenplay.
  • ‘Graveyard Rats’: the episode will be written and directed by Vincenzo Natali and is based on Henry Kuttner’s short story of the same name.
  • ‘Lot 36’: This is one of the two original del Toro creations which will be directed by Guillermo Navarro.
  • ‘Pickman’s Model’: This is yet another episode based on a Lovecraft story which is directed by Keith Thomas and written by Lee Patterson.
  • ‘The Autopsy’: based on Michael Shea’s short story, the episode is directed by David Prior and based on David S. Goyer’s screenplay.
  • ‘The Murmuring’: This is the other original del Toro creation which will be directed by Jennifer Kent.
  • ‘The Outside’: This episode is directed by Ana Lily Amirpour and based on Haley Z. Boston’s screenplay. It is adapted from Emily;y Carroll’s short story.
  • ‘The Viewing’: Aaron Stewart-Ahn and Panos Cosmatos’ short story is being adapted into this episode which will be helmed by Cosmatos.

What do we know about the various Cabinet of Curiosities stories? 

Previously known as Guillermo del Toro Presets 10 After MidnightCabinet of Curiosities is set to be “a collection of unprecedented and genre-defining stories meant to challenge our traditional notions of horror”. They also promise to teem elements from “macabre to magical, gothic to grotesque or classically creepy” from directors who have been hand-picked by del Toro himself.

Who has been cast in Cabinet of Curiosities?

Cabinet of Curiosities has a large ensemble cast which has been divided on the basis of episodes below:

  • ‘Dreams in the Witch House’: This episode will star Harry Potter star Rupert Grint who was on del Toro’s radar for quite some time. Grint will be joined by Ismael Cruz Cordova, Via Vandals, DJ Qualls, Fenika Davis etc.
  • ‘Graveyard Rats’: David Hewlett from The Shape of Water is the only announced cast member.
  • ‘Lot 36’: Tim Blake Nelson, Elpidia Carrillo, Demetrius Grosse and Sebastian Roche are some of the actors working in this episode.
  • ‘Hickman’s Model’: Shadow and Bone star Ben Barnes is excited to be a part of this episode. He is being joined by Crispin Glover and Oriana Leman.
  • ‘The Autopsy’: Academy Award-winning star F. Murray Abraham will be joining Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom star Glynn Turman and Black Sails actors Luke Roberts on this episode.
  • ‘The Murmuring’: The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln will be back on Netflix with his appearance in this epidote alongside Hannah Galway and Essie Davis.
  • ‘The Outside’: The cast includes Kate Micucci and Martin Starr.
  • ‘The Viewing’: Robocop star Peter Weller will join Sofia Boutella, Steve Agee, Saad Siddiqui, Eric Andre, Charlyne Yi and Michael Therrialt for this episode.
