Everything to know about the Quasimodo movie, ‘The Hunchback, Soul of Paris’

Victor Hugo’s French Gothic novel, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, is being reimagined as a fresh new movie on Netflix, The Hunchback, Soul of Paris, formerly developed under the working title Quasimodo, l’âme de Paris.

If you’re expecting a conventional adaptation of the 1831 book, all we can say is that you’re in for a surprise.

Packed with equal parts historical elements, action and thrills, the upcoming movie is shaping up to be one of the biggest entries from Netflix’s French slate of original productions this year.

So, if history, literature, and crime are your favourite mix, here’s a comprehensive rundown of everything known so far about The Hunchback, Soul of Paris.

What is the plot?

The Hunchback, Soul of Paris is a non-traditional reimagining of Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, complete with historical drama, stylised action, and page-turner thrills. Set in Paris in 1830, the Quasimodo movie unfolds in a cholera-outbreak-ridden city where an intense pursuit of a hunchback, torn between political vulnerability and impossible love, goes on for medical experiments to find a cure for the disease.

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, Jean-François Richet revealed that the script is based on the theories of British archivist Adrian Glew, who alleged the famous bell-ringer was a real-life stone carver Hugo stumbled upon. “We are starting from a credible premise rather than a true story,” Richet says.

Who is in the cast and crew?

Vincent Cassel has been cast to portray the hunchback, while Karim Leklou plays the Director of Security hunting Quasimodo. The rest of the cast of The Hunchback, Soul of Paris includes Benjamin Voisin as the doctor hunting the hunchback, Daphné Patakia, Noémie Lvovsky, Sébastien Pouderoux, Eli Nachmani, and Alexis Rosenstiehl.

Jean-François Richet directs the movie, with the screenplay written by Éric Besnard and Edgar Marie. Clément Miserez and Matthieu Warter serve as co-producers on behalf of Radar Films.
