Whoopi Goldberg helms new girls’ trip comedy, ‘Women Like Us,’ with a star cast
Netflix is currently fanning the flames of a fresh girls’ trip comedy in an upcoming feature film, Women Like Us, led by none other than Whoopi Goldberg, best known for her stint in the cult crime comedy Sister Act.
Goldberg is ready to pack her bags, as are her all-girl gang comprising Jenifer Lewis from What’s Love Got to Do and Black-ish, Vanessa Williams from Ugly Betty and The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical, and Vivica A Fox from Kill Bill and Set It Off, who are heading to the Hamptons in the new original Netflix comedy.
Directed by Tasha Smith, whose credits include Mayor of Kingstown and ‘Tis So Sweet, Women Like Us is a forthcoming girls’ trip comedy that unpacks over an unforgettable weekend. The Netflix Original movie follows a recently widowed woman who is forced to join her lifelong best friends and sisters at the Hamptons on what was originally supposed to be her 30th wedding anniversary.
Although the group drags her to the Hamptons, hoping that a weekend away would do good to her heart, the trip soon evolves into a reckoning with “grief, marriage, and the sisterhood that’s carried them throughout the years.” At the same time, the weekend also underscores a significant realisation that “dreams don’t have an expiration date.”
Needless to say, plenty of emotional baggage awaits the all-girls trip in Women Like Us. But even then, knowing the feel-good chaos that’s on the other end, we already cannot wait for the weekend away.
While Netflix has pulled back the curtain on its star-studded cast, the roles Goldberg, Lewis, Williams, and Fox are about to portray remain under wraps. Similarly, the streaming giant has chosen to stay tight-lipped about the character details.
Ali Kinney, whose writing credits include Ginny & Georgia and The Crossover, has written the screenplay alongside Tracy Oliver. James Lopez and Poppy Hanks produce Women Like Us on behalf of MACRO Film Studios alongside Anikah McLaren and Mark R Wright for Higher Ground.
Michelle Obama is attached to the comedy as an executive producer for Higher Ground, with Charles D King executive producing the movie for MACRO Film Studios.
