Lone Survivor director Peter Berg has slid down the historical lanes to breathe life into an epic World War II story in The Mosquito Bowl, scheduled to hit select theatres in October before hitting Netflix shelves this November.
Adapted from Pulitzer Prize-winning Buzz Bissinger’s nonfiction book The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, the upcoming film follows four of America’s college football players who set aside their budding athletic careers to join the military.
Speaking to Tudum about his highly anticipated film, Berg clarified, “This is very much a reality-based film. We are representing forces larger than ourselves – honouring men of the Marine Corps who sacrificed their lives in 1944 and 1945.”

What is the plot?
Set in the aftermath of the attack on Pearl Harbour, The Mosquito Bowl is a forthcoming World War II film, focusing on four top college football players from America – John McLaughry, Bob Baumann, Tony Butkovich, and David Schreiner – who left their booming sports career and rising fame to enlist in the Marines. Determined to serve the nation, they quickly find themselves uprooted from their comfortable lives and thrust into the bitter reality of the ongoing war.
The movie weighs in on the “true cost of war and the unbreakable bonds of brotherhood.”
Who is in the cast and crew?
The Mosquito Bowl is coming together with an ensemble cast, starring Nicholas Galitzine as Brown University quarterback John McLaughry, Bill Skarsgård as Bob Baumann, who played for the University of Wisconsin, Ray Nicholson as Purdue star Tony Butkovich, and Tom Francis as David Schreiner, who played for the University of Wisconsin alongside Baumann.
