Netflix is constantly refilling its cyber shelves with quality products and this week is no different as a host of films and series land on the streaming platform for your viewing pleasure. It may well be spooky season, but there are very few chills on this week’s list.
That’s not to say there are none, though. As well as the dark and twisted adult romance After, there is the delightfully demented It Follows, which sees an evil curse passed between lovers. Starring Marika Monroe, it might well be the best movie added this week.
The official synopsis for It Follows reads: “After carefree teenager Jay (Maika Monroe) sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh (Jake Weary), for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they, too, begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.”
Perhaps the biggest series of the week is Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul, another of Netflix’s exposes on a trend that has taken over lives and destroyed societies. This gripping documentary delves into the tumultuous journey of Juul, a once-promising Silicon Valley startup that skyrocketed to global prominence and later plummeted into controversy.
The documentary, directed by R.J. Cutler and based on Jamie Ducharme’s book, Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul, paints a vivid picture of Juul’s transformation from a scrappy tech startup with idealistic aspirations to a multi-billion-dollar tobacco giant. The story encapsulates the rise and fall of a company that had a profound impact on modern youth.
