‘Doing Life’ ending explained: Are Anika and Carousel finally together?
Tyler Perry’s Doing Life on Netflix is the love story of two people, Anika and Carousel, from very different backgrounds, carrying distinct emotional baggage.
As a single mother, Anika is responsible for her family largely on her own, while Carousel is serving prison time for a past that the people surrounding Anika cannot simply leave behind. Their first encounter does not follow the meet-cute tropes of standard romantic movies. In fact, it dates back to when she was pregnant while working at Holloway Correctional, when Carousel safeguarded her and her unborn baby amidst a prison riot breakout.
From then on, they have kept in touch through letters, a medium that has long gone extinct. But this form of communication somehow allowed them to know each other better, even before the outside world could cast doubt.
Although it might feel like all goes well once Carousel is released, it turns out it is only the beginning of their journey of obstacles before a possible union. Their relationship may not lack love, but it has to tackle family judgments, generational baggage, and a constant fear of an unknown future. So, do Anika and Carousel survive it all and end up together?
Are Anika and Carousel finally together in Doing Life?
At the centre of Tyler Perry’s Doing Life is the idea of a second chance, which, thankfully, is not a temporary trope in the movie. In the film, Anika and Carousel go through a journey of their own, ultimately ending up together to prove that second chances are sometimes worth the hassle. While their relationship moves far beyond the prison letters and the memory that brought them together the first time, their union is not fast-tracked for cinematic catharsis.
Neither is Carousel’s checkered past magically erased, nor do Anika’s family suddenly show open-arms acceptance. However, amidst the raised eyebrows, they have seen something in each other that the rest of the world failed to see or simply refused to consider, making it a point for themselves to work through every odd to be together.
Their relationship grows pretty concrete through their letters, which forces them to acknowledge whether they truly want to be each other, leaving no room for casual flings or infatuation. However, the growth is not theirs alone, as Anika’s side of the family also learns to stop projecting their fears onto her.
Although their concern for Anika is genuine, it doesn’t necessarily give them a pass to control her decisions or assume that she should follow in their footsteps. So, it’s safe to say Lisa’s turnaround and support for Anika become a crucial point in Doing Life, bringing her closer to Carousel and her family, in every sense.
