One of the highlights Netflix has recently released is the documentary Beckham, a peek into the life of footballing legend David Beckham and his family. Directed by Fisher Stephens, fans celebrated the four-part series, and it has now been announced that it is up for a Bafta.
Although there are many moments of note in the series, the one that provided both a touch of comedy between David and his wife, former Spice Girl, Victoria and gave insight into their dynamic was the moment the Harlow-born singer claimed: “We both come from families that work very hard we’re very working class”.
However, the former Manchester United winger took issue with his wife’s claims and humorously pressed her to “be honest” after poking his head round the door, with her eventually admitting that he father drove her to school in a Rolls Royce in the 1980s. Notably, her father, Anthony, owned an electronics wholesale business, giving her and her sister, Louise, a comfortable upbringing.
After claiming, “I am being honest,” David continued to press her by asking, “What car did your dad drive you to school in?” Giving into the pressure, she then said, “It depends, but yes, in the 80s, my dad had a Rolls Royce.” A smug David then said “Thank You” and left the room.
As the scene was one of the highlights of Beckham, which was a resounding success for Netflix, the scene has been somewhat surprisingly nominated for the TV Bafta in the ‘Memorable Moments’ category, along with five other entries. The further nominations are from Doctor Who, Happy Valley, Succession and The Last of Us.
The other scenes are the end of Happy Valley, the arrival of Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who, the death of business tycoon Logan Roy in Succession, the performance of teenager Lucy on Channel 4’s pianist contest The Piano, and the story of Bill and Frank in the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us.
