Inside Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy-led mythical dark comedy ‘Sacrifice’
Director Romain Gavras has always had a soft corner for myths, a liking he largely took from his father, acclaimed Greek director Costa-Gavras. While his father’s works wove epic tales of gods and men, the Athena filmmaker is gearing up for a mythical black comedy, Sacrifice, starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Joy, on Netflix.
“In myths, everything is a little bit heightened. The violence is exacerbated, the humour can be exacerbated, the stakes are exacerbated, and there are echoes with the past and the future,” Gavras tells Tudum.
“The film is kind of a rollercoaster,” Gavras explains, suggesting, “You need to enter the film like you’re going to enter a ride and let yourself go. There’s a lot of rug pulls, and you think you’re going this way, but you’re going that way.”
So, for those awaiting their next star-studded watch on Netflix, here’s a rundown of everything known so far about Sacrifice.
What is the plot?
Set against the backdrop of an A-list charity gala packed with celebrities and billionaires, Sacrifice is an upcoming mythical dark comedy movie that follows a down-on-his-luck action movie star, Mike Tyler, who is struggling with an existential crisis and is taken hostage by a radical cult leader, Joan, and her dedicated followers. The reason? The cult is driven by a belief that an apocalyptic event is set to unfold over the next three days if three people aren’t sacrificed to a nearby volcano.
Romain Gavras and Arbery drew inspiration from the mythology Gavras loved as a child, adding unprecedented twists. Although the film isn’t based on a single text, the director explains, “The inspiration goes from Greek myths to French stories like Joan of Arc,” adding with jest, “And another myth that is more recent, which is Lord of the Rings.”
Who is in the cast?
Sacrifice brings together a star-studded ensemble featuring Chris Evans as Mike Tyler and Anya Taylor-Joy as Joan. Vincent Cassel as Ben Bracken, Ambika Mod as Daughter Nature, Jonatan ‘Yung Lean’ Leandoer as Arthur, Sam Richardson as Oliver, Jade Croot as Louise, Miriam Silverman as Anna, Charli XCX as Mother Nature, John Malkovich as Gunnar, and Salma Hayek-Pinault as Gloria Bracken.
