Sandra Bullock has always been Netflix’s lucky charm. The Academy Award-winning actress has topped charts consequently with her 2018 film Bird Box that amassed massive revenue for the streamer, followed by her latest 2021 release The Unforgivable that has topped popularity charts yet again.
Starring Viola Davis, Jon Bernthal, Vincent D’Onofrio and Aisling Franciosi in major roles aongside Bullock, the film is adapted from Sally Wainwright’s 2009 British limited series Unforgiven. The Netflix film was helmed by German filmmaker Nora Fingscheidt, who is well known for her 2019 film System Crasher.
Although the film received lukewarm reception due to its very obvious setting, the various twists and turns and the nerve-wracking ending made up for its flaws.
In a thrilling tale of ambiguous morality and sisterhood, Bullock is seen as the lead protagonist, Ruth Slater who is imprisoned for murdering the sheriff. After being released after nearly two decades, she tries to look for her sister who was sent to a foster home.
However, Ruth finds out that people are not very forgiving of her tainted past and still hold on to their prejudices. Moreover, she is pursued by vengeful sons and haunted by a wrong kidnapping in her quest to find her sister.
Amidst all this chaos, the truth regarding the alleged crime she had committed finally comes to the fore and unites the two sisters in a heartwarming finale.
The film mainly plays on the concept of love, loss, guilt and anguish. However, it lacks the flavour of a good thriller and does somewhat of a disservice to an actress of Bullock’s stature.
