Animated ‘Twilight’ series confirmed for Netflix
Just as the culture of the 2000s is starting to take hold of people across the board, from the fashion to music, so is a fascination with the films that the decade produced. While many iconic titles materialised during those consequential years and impressed themselves deeply on popular culture, one that stands out, for better or for worse, is The TwilightSaga. As many fans of the series will be delighted to hear, it is set to return in a new form on Netflix.
While certainly not for everyone, and widely lampooned, The Twilight Saga is a series of five fantasy romance films based on the book series Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. Comprised of Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn – Part 1, and Breaking Dawn – Part 2, released between 2008 and 2012, the series grossed over $3.36billion worldwide and made global stars out of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.
The first film starred Stewart as Bella Swan, the teenage girl who develops a relationship with the vampire Edward Cullen, and his efforts to protect her from another coven of vampires. Over the rest of the series, things become more complex for the pair, such as when Jacob gets involved.
Now, it looks like the polarising tale between Team Edward and Team Jacob is set to return. Netflix has ordered an animated series based on Midnight Sun, Stephenie Meyer’s companion novel, which retells the events of Twlight from Cullen’s point of view. The original series is told from Swan’s perspective.
Lionsgate Television began early development on a Twilight TV project last year and will be producing the series. Lionsgate’s subsidiary, Summit Entertainment, helmed the films.
Sinead Daly, who wrote a duo of first-season episodes of Hulu’s Tell Me Lies, will adapt the novel and serve as executive producer alongside Meyer herself, Fickle Fish Films’ Meghan Hibbett, Wyck Godfrey, and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill Entertainment, and Erik Feig and Samie Kim Falvey of Picturestart. Emily Wissink will oversee Picturestart’s operations.
The animated adaptation of Midnight Sun comes as part of Lionsgate’s concerted efforts to expand upon some of its most famous properties. These have recently included The Hunger Games prequel movie, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and a forthcoming John Wick sequel series, John Wick: Under the High Table. The latter will see the star of the four films, Keanu Reeves, and director Chad Stahelski serve as executive producers for Lionsgate Television.
