'All Quiet on the Western Front' leads Netflix at the Academy Awards with 9 nominations

Edward Berger’s Netflix original war drama All Quiet on the Western Front is leading the platform at the 95th Academy Awards with nine nominations. The film, starring Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Daniel Brühl, Sebastian Hülk, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic and Devid Striesow, follows the life of a German soldier in World War I.

Actor Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed announced the complete list of Oscar nominees today, with Netflix obtaining 16 slots across various originals. Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1928 novel of the same name, Berger’s war drama has received significant nominations for ‘Best Picture’ and Adapted Screenplay.

The film has also received nominations for ‘Sound Design’, ‘Original Score’ and ‘International Feature Film’ (Germany). In addition, it can win for Makeup and Hairstyling, Production Design, Cinematography and Visual Effects.

All Quiet on the Western Front also dominated the BAFTA nominations with 14 nominations among categories. “We are speechless and overwhelmed. It’s an enormous honour to be acknowledged by the British Film Academy,” the director shared with Variety as a response to the BAFTAs. “That the film has resonated with so many people is a testament to Erich Maria Remarque’s extraordinary book, written 100 years ago and yet, sadly, still relevant today.”

He added: “It was our north star. The novel’s powerful anti-war message unites us, no matter which country we live in,” the director continued. “We are indebted to our incredible creative team — each person was an integral part of the whole and turned the film into what it is now. Thank you so much, Bafta. We are deeply humbled.”

Other Netflix originals that have received nominations at this year’s Oscars are Pinocchio, directed by Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro G.Iñárritu’s Bardo and Andrew Dominick’s Blonde.

The 95th Academy Awards will take place on Sunday, March 12th, and will be hosted by comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
