Ali Wong teams with Ashley Tisdale for Netflix comedy ‘Toxic Moms’
Netflix must’ve seen something special in Toxic Moms, because the project is already under development after a right little bidding war, and when you’ve got Ashley Tisdale, Ali Wong and Sabrina Jalees all attached, it’s not hard to see why everyone was paying attention.
The show has got everything from dark comedy to motherhood and friendship. Let’s be honest, though, the big headline’s Wong teaming up with Tisdale. A bit of an unexpected pairing, isn’t it? But the more you think about it, the more it just works.
Wong has become one of comedy’s sharpest voices, while Tisdale’s clearly moving well beyond that Disney image that lots of people still picture when they hear her name.
Jalees is writing the series, with Wong and Tisdale both on board as executive producers. Better still, Wong could end up directing as well if Netflix gives it a full series order.
The story follows a first-time mum who is absolutely knackered and desperate to find people who actually get what she’s going through. That search lands her in an exclusive little circle of wealthy mums who seem to have life completely sorted, from their picture-perfect families to that effortless confidence they all carry.
But come on… nothing’s ever that simple, is it? Behind all those smiles is plenty of baggage and hidden agendas. Before long, our new mum starts realising that fitting in with this crowd might cost her a lot more than she ever bargained for.
The whole idea actually comes from Tisdale’s personal inspiration from bringing up her own two young kids, along with all the conversations sparked by her viral essay, Breaking Up with My Toxic Mom Group.. That’s what gives Toxic Moms that extra little spark.
Netflix has spent the last few years building up its female-led comedy line-up, and Toxic Moms fits right into that plan. If it gets the green light, don’t be surprised.
