Emmys 2024: Ali Wong becomes the first Asian woman with a lead role award

Netflix, and especially BEEF, had a great set of wins at the Primetime Emmy Awards this year. But it was Ali Wong who came away with the grandest moment. Wong made history by becoming the first Asian woman to pick up an award for a leading role.

It was a huge night for BEEF, the brilliant comedy series which also starred Steven Yeun. Wong and Yeun feature as two participants in a road rage incident whose messy lives get increasingly entangled as they descend into their own personal hells.

In addition to the multiple Emmy wins for BEEF, which included a ‘Best Actor’ triumph for Yeun, Wong emerged on top in the ‘Best Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or TV Movie’ category. It was definitely deserved because her performance elevated the unique comedic currents that ran throughout the show.

During her acceptance speech, the actor acknowledged the importance of the win and talked about the invaluable support her family has provided.

She began: “I wouldn’t be standing here without my parents, my amazing parents, my father who I so wish was alive to share this moment with me, my hilarious father who loved me unconditionally and taught me the value of failure.”

Wong dedicated the historic win to her children: “To my beautiful daughters: you are my everything. Thank you for inspiring me, and this is for you.”
