Netflix has dropped word of yet another original series for subscribers to enjoy in the near future, with the first trailer for LGBTQ+ action animation, Q-Force.
The official synopsis, along with the energetic initial trailer, gives significant promise for this adult animated comedy, particularly as it feels like such an innovative concept. An official synopsis of the plot, reads, “Steve Maryweather, AKA Agent Mary, was once the Golden Boy of the American Intelligence Agency (AIA), until he came out as gay. Unable to fire him, the Agency sent him off to West Hollywood, to disappear into obscurity. Instead, he assembled a misfit squad of LGBTQ+ geniuses”.
Continuing, the synopsis begins to outline this LGBTQ team, “Joining forces with the expert mechanic Deb, master of drag and disguise Twink, and hacker Stat, together they’re Q-Force. But, after a decade of waiting for their first official mission from The AIA, Mary becomes hell-bent on proving himself to the Agency that turned its back on him, and decides to go rogue with Q-Force”. This dream team is soon turned on its head however when they must put up with a new member of their squad, the “straight-guy Agent Buck”.
Featuring the voice talents of Gary Cole, Sean Hayes, David Harbour, Laurie Metcalf, Patti Harrison, Matt Rogers and Wanda Sykes, the shows LGBTQ driving force extends behind the camera too, with many of the cast members identifying as gay, lesbian and transgender. Hayes shares the responsibility of bringing the actual show to life, alongside The Office, Parks and Recreation and Saturday Night Live producer Michael Schur. Both Hayes and Schur also penned the script, with Brooklyn Nine-Nine writer Gabe Liedman joining them.
With Netflix searching for a wider variety of content, this LGBTQ animation could be a fantastic acquisition, particularly with the lack of such representation in the genre.
Q-Force will debut on Netflix on September 2.
