‘3 Body Problem’ cast members discuss the importance of their characters

On March 21st, Netflix introduced streamers to its new series, 3 Body Problem. Created by David Benioff, D. B. Weiss and Alexander Woo, the show is based on the popular sci-fi book series Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Liu Cixin.

According to the Netflix synopsis, the story, set in the past, present and future, follows a catastrophic sequence of events that “reverberate across space and time”. “When the laws of nature inexplicably unravel before their eyes, a close-knit group of brilliant scientists join forces with an unorthodox detective to confront the greatest threat in humanity’s history,” it reads.

As viewers get their teeth stuck into the gripping story, some main cast members have shared useful details about their characters. First up, John Bradley, the star known for his previous work in Game of Thrones, explained how his character “ploughs his own furrow.”

Continuing, the star revealed how his character, Jack Rooney, is an “independent man” whom he can relate to. “[Rooney] won’t go along with whatever he’s told, won’t try to toe the party line,” Bradley told Variety in a new interview. “I think that comes from the idea that he comes — a little bit like myself — from a working-class background and found himself in an environment and mixing with a group of people that you wouldn’t normally expect somebody from that background to mix with.

Bradley added that having boxed above his weight, Rooney is confident and uncompromising. “He’s determined to look everybody in the eye and not bow down to people and not do what he’s told,” he added.

Meanwhile, Jess Hong revealed that her character, Jin Cheng, is “one of five brilliant physicists.” Ambitious and intelligent, her character loves nothing more than problem-solving. “She won’t stop once she finds a problem that she wants to solve,” Hong said. “And she’ll keep doing it, even at the loss of her own sleep and eating and social life. She will just relentlessly drive forward in her mission.”

Eiza González, who portrays Auggie Salazar, another member of the Oxford Five, describes her character as “the perfect version of a 21st-century woman. She’s complex, she is an ambitious, smart pioneer in the science field, a woman with vision, with integrity, with ethical balance.”

Benedict Wong, famed for previous roles in Doctor Strange and Marco Polo, is partnered with Liam Cunningham’s Thomas Wadeare as a pair of unorthodox counterterrorism operatives. These two are undisputed heroes of the series. “He’s great at this job,” Wong said of his character, Da Shi. “He actually is his job, to the detriment of his family life. That’s the sacrifice. The one simple line is, ‘I like helping people.'”

Addressing his close and fruitful partnership with Thomas Wadeare, he added: “We [are] the most unlikely duo paired together, but for the greatest admiration, they’re aligned for the greater good.”
