The sun might be giving off some promisingly hot rays, but this hasn’t stopped us from consuming Netflix content like a rabid groundhog. Looking at the statistics, it’s the brand new Ashton Kutcher comedy Your Place or Mine that swoops in as the most popular movie of the week just passed.
Recording over 51 million hours viewed, Your Place or Mine has proven to be an early success for Netflix, providing some easy rom-com fun just in time for Valentine’s Day. Starring Kutcher alongside Reese Witherspoon, Jesse Williams and Tig Notaro, the film tells the story of two long-distance friends whose lives change when she pursues a childhood dream, and he offers to look after her teenage son.
The Netflix movie True Spirit takes the second spot after two weeks in the top ten, earning over 20 million hours viewed over the last seven days. Directed by the same mind behind 2013s Around the Block, Sarah Spillane, the film tells the story of the real-life Australian teenager Jessica Watson, the youngest person ever to sail solo, non-stop around the world.
Meanwhile, at number three is the recent Netflix comedy You People, starring Eddie Murphy and Jonah Hill. Telling the story of a new couple and their families, who try to navigate clashing cultures, societal expectations and generational differences, the new comedy has managed to magnetise a substantial audience despite its lack of critical success, with both beloved lead stars proving to still be a pull for modern audiences.
Elsewhere, the recent addition of the new semi-animated movie Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile has jumped onto the top ten leaderboard, taking number six with over nine million views. With a voice cast including Javier Bardem, Scoot McNairy, Constance Wu, Shawn Mendes and Lyric Hurd, the film failed to drum up much excitement during its theatrical run but hopes to do far better on streaming.
