Zoë Kravitz and Sadie Sink star in Netflix horror game ‘Unhinged’
Looks like Netflix is getting a bit braver with its games, and this new one sounds like it will get under your skin. It’s called Unhinged, and it’s a new horror game from Night School Studio starring Zoë Kravitz, Sadie Sink and Troy Baker.
It’s coming to Netflix on June 30th, and instead of just sitting back watching something scary, Netflix wants you right in the middle of it. They are clearly having another go at mixing TV and gaming together, and this one looks a lot creepier than anything they’ve tried before.
Zoë Kravitz voices Ava, a woman trapped inside a block of flats that has gone completely dark during a storm. Armed with nothing but her phone, she is trying to figure out what’s going on while keeping in touch with her friend Claire, voiced by Sadie Sink, and the building’s superintendent Ben, played by Troy Baker.
Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a horror if everything was nice and simple, would it? Before long, Ava realises there is something else lurking around the building with her.
Now, instead of picking up a controller, you will scan a QR code with your phone, and that becomes part of the game itself. Your mobile acts as Ava’s phone, so you will be reading messages, answering calls and even using it as a torch while the main action plays out on your TV. It’s a pretty smart idea, and if you are anything of a gamer, you will probably end up eyeing your own phone a bit differently afterwards.
The good news is you don’t have to be some gaming expert to enjoy it either. If you are just in it for the story, there is a story mode that gets rid of all the death mechanics and timed challenges, so you can feel the atmosphere without stressing. If you fancy more of a challenge, Standard Mode throws in countdowns and proper pressure, meaning you will need to think fast or risk getting bumped off before carrying on from the last checkpoint.
The announcement comes just a few days after Netflix rolled out its FIFA-themed TV game, so it’s pretty clear they are serious about turning your TV into more than just somewhere to binge shows.
