WWE dethrones ‘Squid Game’ at top spot in Netflix chart
Squid Game season two’s reign at the top of the Netflix most popular charts didn’t last too long, as the hit Korean show has been dethroned by the much-hyped debut of WWE Monday Night Raw on the streaming platform.
In addition to Raw, Netflix paid a staggering $5billion for the rights to stream all of WWE’s weekly programming, including NXT and Friday Night Smackdown, as well as the monthly Premium Live Events. That gamble appears to have paid off in spades, though, as Raw’s glitzy, star-studded live debut shot to the top of the chart at the expense of Squid Game, which set viewing records of its own when it landed on Boxing Day.
The show, which ran for a lengthy 183 minutes, featured four huge matches, including Roman Reigns vs Solo Sikoa in a Tribal combat bout and a main event of CM Punk vs Seth Rollins.
The show also saw Rhea Ripley crowned the new Women’s World Champion in front of a sold-out 17,000 crowd at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, California.
Several WWE legends made appearances at the event, such as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, The Undertaker, and John Cena, while a host of celebrities were in the audience, including Macauley and Kieran Culkin, Vanessa Hudgens, and O’Shea Jackson Jr. Hip-hop star Travis Scott also performed while accompanying competitor Jey Uso to the ring.
During an appearance on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show, WWE commentator Michael Cole revealed that everyone involved with the show knew how historic it was.
He said, “Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, our Chief Content Officer, gave us a nice speech, and he’s really, really excited. Very emotional, as we all are. This changes the game. Not only for professional wrestling, sports entertainment; it changes the game for all of entertainment.”
Cole continued: “We’re going to become the first show to stream live weekly on Netflix. Obviously, we’ve talked about the NFL, we’re talked about the Tyson/Paul fight – this is a game changer for across-the-board entertainment-wise.”
