Winona Ryder says ‘Stranger Things’ star is the “next Meryl Streep”

Winona Ryder was the only popular name associated with the Duffer Brothers’ 2016 creation, Stranger Things during its inception. Years later, the show has become a massive pop-cultural phenomenon, catapulting its cast to superstardom.

While Ryder has been riding on the popularity high, she has always gushed over her young co-stars. Calling them “talented”, the Edward Scissorhands actress talked about how the show “really scored with these kids.”

Ryder plays Joyce Byers, the mother of Will Byers whose mysterious disappearance in season one becomes the major point of conflict in the show, leading the rest of the cast to stumble upon strange and sinister supernatural events and occurrences, including a demonic entity, illegal experiments and corrupt bureaucracy.

The show starred young actors like Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Priah Ferguson, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery and others, whose careers got an unprecedented push since the meteoric success of Stranger Things

Ryder, however, reserved special praise for one of her young co-stars, comparing her to some of the greatest acting legends to have reigned Hollywood. According to Ryder, 20-year-old Sadie Sink “is like Live Ullmann.” Ryder added., “She’s going to be like Meryl Streep.”

Streep, who was recently seen in the Netflix disaster satire Don’t Look Up, has starred in the 1993 film The House of Spirits alongside Ryder. Ryder had the brilliant opportunity of watching this revered actress up close and personal.

The 83-year-old actress Liv Ullmann is a longtime collaborator of Swedish auteur Ingmar Bergman and has been showered with numerous awards and accolades for her soulful and emotional performances that have often affected the audience deeply.

The fourth season was particularly “Max-heavy” as the Duffer Brothers confirmed. As Max, Sink is seen reeling under heavy depression and guilt over the death of her step-brother in the previous season. She goes through some of the darkest moments in the show and even encounters the nightmarish Vecna who tries to overpower her by playing mind games before ultimately being saved by her friends and her favourite song.

Stranger Things season four released the first volume comprising seven episodes on May 27th, 2022, and will release the second volume with two feature-length episodes on July 1st, 2022.
