‘Wind River’: Netflix brings an intense thriller movie from the ‘Yellowstone’ creator
Taylor Sheridan is no longer a name; he’s a force to be reckoned with in the Western genre. The Yellowstone creator singlehandedly dominates the television landscape, and Netflix knows it all too well.
Despite starting his showbiz journey with acting in television series in small and recurring roles, he has carved his own niche in Hollywood. That means he has officially touched down on Netflix not to flex his acting chops, but to flaunt his directorial vision, with his neo-Western crime film, Wind River.
Before viewers leave all that’s there to do today to tune into this 2017 thriller, they must note that it’s only available on Netflix US. While that could break some hearts, the anticipation must not drain down Stateside.
In case you’re already sold, there’s more. Wind River reunites two fan-favourite Marvel Cinematic Universe stars, Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner. Set against the icy wilderness of Wyoming, the murder mystery marks Sheridan’s third movie based on the modern American West.
Crowned with rave reviews, an 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating, and a 7.7/10 IMDb score, Wind River follows a US Fish and Wildlife Service tracker and an FBI agent, who join forces to solve a twisted whodunit on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. The Yellowstone creator reportedly wrote the concept to inform, educate, bring to attention, and spread awareness about the alarming rate of crimes against Indigenous women, including inhumane rapes and cold-blooded murders.
Wind River is not only a gripping murder mystery story but also a visually stunning work of art. The film was already a box office success, grossing $45million against a reported budget of $11million. But since its Netflix touchdown in America, the film has been blowing up and trailblazing the top ten movie chart.
Currently, Wind River is ranked seventh on the top ten movies chart in the US. The Western thriller also has a sequel in the making, Wind River: Uprising. It has already finished production. However, neither Renner nor Olsen is returning for the sequel.
In fact, Sheridan also doesn’t serve as a writer or director. Kari Skogland is reportedly in the director’s chair for what’s to come with a script from Matthew George, Patrick Massett, and John Zinman. But keeping those concerns at bay, make the most of Wind River’s streaming tenure on Netflix before the time’s up.
