Will there be a ‘Sirens’ season two?

Some shows send you to siren sleep the minute you hit the play button. Then there are shows that immediately spark up debate and discussions about a follow-up season. Luckily, Netflix majorly rolls out titles that fall under the second category, its latest limited series, Sirens, being one of them. Based on Molly Smith Metzler’s 2011 play, Elemeno Pea, Sirens takes place over the course of a weekend at a palatial beach estate.

Netflix loves a good tenterhook. And Sirens reeks with plenty of them. As fans scour through tabloids to get hold of every “ending explained” template, a select few are guaranteed to be caught up in the paradox of rewatches to get their answers. So far, so long, the questions are piling up one after another. But the only one hovering indefinitely on every mind is whether Sirens will have a second season.

A second season could close the lid on a much-needed closure. But given Sirens is a limited series, would such an opportunity arise? In a recent conversation with Glamour, Metzler weighed in on the possibilities. Speaking of the probe on a second instalment, Metzler said, “I just love this question because to me, it means that people love the characters, and that’s the ultimate compliment.” She wrote the play 15 years ago, and honestly, she could go on with the characters until her last breath.

“I’d never say never, but could I do them justice in another season? I’d have to think about it,” Metzler mused. She tied up a few loose ends for Sirens season one. She shed light on the finale scene where Peter pants heavily in his room while Simone struggles to catch her breath at the beach. According to Metzler, the scene was supposed to signify and convey a shared experience. “We wanted it to feel that she was siren-zing him; she was reaching to him,” she explained.

Metzler also lifted the lid on the conversation Peter and Simone have at the beach, which left many guessing. However, she added, “I think the not knowing is sexier, actually, and certainly more active.” The unsaid was meticulously implied to ensure viewers were on their toes. While Metzler also opened up about Michaela, Devon, and Jordan, the conversation rounded back to the potential of a second season for Sirens.

Many ifs and buts may hinder the possibility of Sirens season two. However, if Netflix gives the green light in the future, Metzler would not think twice. “I feel like it would be an incredible honour to work with this team and with this cast again,” she added. She expressed her love for the characters and how she knows them “inside and out.” “But my hesitation would always be, do I have another story that would be worthy of this incredible cast?” she introspected.

Metzler believes in the power of comebacks. But not if it’s not for the right reason. “There’s nothing worse than coming back for the wrong reason,” she said of Sirens season two. And surely, that’s a perspective that demands respect.
