Will there be a second season of ‘Man on Fire’? Here’s what we know

Man on Fire has set the Internet ablaze for all the right reasons, following its March 30th debut on Netflix.

Based on AJ Quinnell’s 1980 novel, the Netflix series stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as John Creasy, a former Special Forces Mercenary now flattened by PTSD, who is forced to spring back into action due to a deep-seated conspiracy trying to eliminate him and those close to him.

While the seven-episode action thriller has created a buzz unlike any other, it has simultaneously left fans curious about whether a second season could be on the cards.

Unfortunately, Netflix has remained tight-lipped about a follow-up season, meaning it has yet to renew Man on Fire for a second instalment. As is the case with the streaming mogul, it prefers to analyse viewership data and completion rate before green-lighting a continuation.

So, although Man on Fire hasn’t been renewed for a second season, there’s no reason to be upset already.

Now, coming to the question of whether the action thriller can return to Netflix with another season, well, it is highly likely. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the debut season of Man on Fire is based on the first two entries of Quinnell’s book series: Man on Fire (1980) and The Perfect Kill (1992). Three more books remain in the saga: The Blue Ring (1993), Black Horn (1994) and Message from Hell (1996), leaving the showrunners plenty of outlets to continue the series on Netflix.

That’s promising enough, but there’s another aspect that could favour a potential follow-up. Man on Fire begins with Creasy struggling to overcome his personal demons, hoping to start anew when his ally Rayburn approaches him with a security job under President Carmo. But Creasy’s attempt to start a new chapter is cut short with the bombing of the Rayburn family, leaving the sole surviving Rayburn, Poe, in his care.

Throughout the seven-episode series, we see that the more Creasy tries to resist his past, the more it haunts him. Although he manages to outsmart the rivals in an explosive finale, Man on Fire concludes with him receiving a call from CIA Director Moncrief, who wants to send him on a new mission that’s tightly linked to the ghosts of his past.

The details of the mission remain under wraps, but what’s known so far is that it is likely linked to the Mexico City mishap that left him scarred beyond repair. For those in need of a recollection, the reason behind Creasy’s recoil is the Mexico City mission where his entire team was wiped out at the Vallejo Industrial Zone.

The concluding scenes suggest that Moncrief might know who’s responsible, and Creasy looks more than ready to avenge his allies, if there comes a second season. Although it remains to be seen what the future holds for Man on Fire, until then, stay tuned for more updates!
