Will there be a ‘Dept Q’ season two?

Since the May 29th premiere of Dept Q, the world has been abuzz differently. Netflix has surely hit a home run with the mystery series, despite transporting it to a landscape not found in the books. For years, the streaming mogul has faced setbacks with adaptive inaccuracies. But this time, it flipped the script once and for all with the Danish author in on it. Following the streaming success of Dept Q, it only makes sense that viewers want more of it. However, the question looming large is whether Netflix allows a welcoming relief.

As of now, Netflix has not renewed Dept Q for a follow-up season. However, actor Matthew Goode and creator Scott Frank are all in for a second lap. Earlier this month, in an interview with Collider, Frank revealed that it was always a part of his plan to do more with the Netflix series. “That was something we wanted to, and hopefully we will do,” he said. Goode chimed in, unveiling that he’s curious to know what the dynamic between the four characters would be in season two.

“If we do get to go again, and there’s nothing greenlit yet at all, that would be very exciting,” the actor added. As for what he would like to explore in the second season, Goode said that the possibilities are many. He would like to study DCI Carl Morck’s life at home, and Akram’s life with his daughters. Since there’s plenty to work with, if they do make a comeback, it would be a solid one for sure.

Speaking of whether Frank has already made up his mind about what’s to come in season two, he said that since Dept Q is based on a book series, he already has a sandbox of ideas. “It is another cold case and also a current case, at the same time, that they’re looking into,” he teased. As for the episode count, Frank shared that a follow-up instalment wouldn’t necessarily consist of nine episodes. It could culminate in six as well. However, nothing is set in stone at the moment.

But rest assured, Frank has a story in his head. In a separate conversation with Deadline on the heels of Dept Q’s release, Goode showered praises on his co-stars Shirley Henderson, Kelly McDonald, and Leah Byrne. And while he was at it, he continued, “Well, it’s writing and talent, where they meet, I suppose. I love them all. That’s why we’re desperate to do a second season.”

While the audience, the lead, and the creator are all seemingly on the same boat, Goode expressed one uncertainty. Upon being asked whether they would like to do more than two seasons, he straight up said he doesn’t know. But there are ten books in the series. So, no one really knows what’s next for Dept Q. However, one sign of relief is that they are clearly not opposed to the idea of continuing the Netflix series.

The Watchmen actor openly expressed his desire to have a character he could come back to. Especially, now that he has reached a certain stage in his career, longevity and depth in a role matter most to him. It remains to be seen whether Netflix answers the prayers this time. However, given its track record of greenlighting shows based on streaming success, Dept Q should be easily on the list.
