Will ‘The Hawk’ return for a second season?
The newest sports-comedy series on Netflix, The Hawk, starring Will Ferrell, is an instant hit, and not without reason.
The Netflix Original Production follows now-washed-out, former golf champion Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, who, despite being well past his prime, is desperate to make a whacky career comeback, believing he’s only a stroke away from completing a grand slam.
Although his body and even his family believe otherwise, that’s simply not enough to make Lonnie take a step back. However, the road to success is anything but a cakewalk. In order to complete his mission, Lonnie must battle and outdo his longtime rival, Golden Fisk, and what’s even more brutal is that he must defeat his own son, Lance, the up-and-coming golden boy of golf.
While the debut season of The Hawk brings a moving conclusion, the finale makes viewers curious whether the comedy is one-and-done.
Well, firstly, Netflix has yet to renew The Hawk for a sophomore season. And considering it has only been a day since its premiere, the streaming giant may take its own sweet time to weigh the viewership numbers and completion rates before announcing their decision about the show’s future.
Of course, there are cases where cancellations and renewals happen rather quickly. However, in most cases, they can easily take up to months.
Additionally, The Hawk didn’t exactly come bearing the tag of a “limited series,” meaning there’s potential room for further seasons, focusing on Lonnie and the other fan-favourite characters. However, with the confirmations currently under wraps, it’s probably too early to say anything for sure.
That said, even though the first season of The Hawk is mostly a self-contained story, which ends with Lonnie letting Lance bag the victory after a web of psychological mind games, true to Hawkins’ style, it feels like the season finale probably lays the groundwork for a potential follow-up. With Stacey breaking it off with Radford, it remains to be seen whether she intends to give her relationship with Lonnie another chance.
But most importantly, even after losing the play-offs, Lonnie is chosen to captain the next Ryder Cup. So, if The Hawk does return, fans can expect a Ryder Cup arc. However, until confirmation arrives, it’s best not to get ahead of ourselves.
