Why you need to be excited about Will Ferrell’s new series, ‘The Hawk’

Anyone who enjoys Will Ferrell doing sports comedy is probably going to want to keep an eye on Netflix right now. That’s because Ferrell is leading a new series called The Hawk, and those who have followed his work for years know that the man has made an entire career out of playing loud, overconfident athletes who believe they are still the greatest in the room. Surprisingly, watching him do that never really gets old.

In the series, Ferrell plays Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, who is a legendary golfer whose name still carries some serious weight in the sport. The story takes us many years later, where it seems like Lonnie isn’t done with the game.

You have to agree that the setup already sounds very “Will Ferrelly”, if you know what we mean. After all, this is the guy who gave us sports comedies like Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Blades of Glory. So watching him play, a former golf superstar running behind one more big win? Yeah, that tracks perfectly.

The difference this time is that the story is getting a full series instead of a movie. That means viewers will get to follow Lonnie Hawkins across multiple episodes as he tries to return to the top of the golf world, which means more screen time for Ferrell, and we are here for it.

What is the plot of The Hawk?

The series follows Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins as he tries to pull off what he believes could be the greatest comeback in golf history. Once the number one player in the sport back in 2004, Lonnie still believes that he belongs on the course, and hence, he gets out there to prove that point.

The challenge becomes even bigger when the next generation starts taking over the spotlight. His own son, Lance, is already making a name for himself as one of golf’s rising stars, which only looks like a massive hit on Lonnie’s ego, thus making his comeback ever harder.

And if you think the rest of his life is easy, then you are terribly mistaken. Away from the course, Lonnie’s life is just as complicated. His estranged wife Stacy is still around, and son Lance’s fiancée Natalie brings her own influence into the picture. But his biggest enemies are the old rivals who are always ready to remind him that the game has moved on. All of that makes Lonnie’s attempt to win one more major title a lot more difficult than it sounds.

Who’s in the cast?

Apart from Ferrell, we have Molly Shannon playing Lonnie’s estranged wife, Stacy, while Jimmy Tatro plays Lance, Lonnie’s son, and Katelyn Tarver plays Lance’s girlfriend, Natalie. Fortune Feimster and Luke Wilson will also appear in some major roles in The Hawk.

The rest of the cast includes Chris Parnell, David Hornsby, Gabriel Hogan and Aida Osman. Ferrell is also involved behind the scenes as a creator and executive producer on the series.

When does The Hawk release on Netflix?

Netflix has confirmed that The Hawk will arrive on Netflix this summer. An exact premiere date has not been announced yet, so fans will have to wait a bit longer for that update. But for now, you can be excited for another Will Ferrell comedy to be added to the Netflix catalogue.
