Will ‘Blood Sacrifice’ return for a second season?
Since premiering on Netflix this August, the Swedish crime thriller Blood Sacrifice has kept viewers glued to the screen with its twisted web of serial killer mystery that defies predictions in more ways than one.
The five-episode thriller opens with a frantic call to the emergency services that lures two police officers straight into a bloody trap, and the dispatching officers are found brutally murdered the next day.
But when a pattern of similar dangerous late-night set-ups targeting more law enforcement officials emerges, Stockholm detective Thomas Berg is forced to pair up with his estranged father, ex-cop Alfred Berg, before more officers end up in body bags.
Blood Sacrifice follows Thomas and Alfred’s joint pursuit of the cold-blooded criminal, who is revealed to be a cop himself in a shocking season one finale that responsibly ties all the loose ends viewers couldn’t stop scratching their heads over. But does that prevent speculation from brewing around a potential second season? Not really.
As of yet, Netflix has not announced an official renewal for the Swedish Nordic noir crime thriller, which was originally conceived as a five-part series. But since it isn’t listed as a miniseries, a format that distances itself from follow-up instalments, packing a self-contained story in a season, the chances of a second season are not unlikely.
Another thing to keep in mind is that Netflix typically weighs a few non-negotiable metrics before announcing a renewal, including the show’s viewership figures and completion rates. Although in a select few cases, cancellations and renewals happen rapidly, it usually takes up to months, and accordingly, a formal word on the show’s future should arrive at the end of the year.
While Netflix is undoubtedly paying attention to the expansion of its overseas productions, with titles such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Sanctuary, and Tokyo Swindlers receiving greenlights for second seasons, the fate of Blood Sacrifice remains unclear for now, as the show focuses on a specific, gritty case that is solved by the time credits roll.
However, that doesn’t necessarily suggest anything negative; it means Blood Sacrifice needs to be a groundbreaking success for Netflix to summon the father-son detective duo again, and whether that’s really in its bingo cards will possibly be revealed in the days to come.
