Will ‘Below’ return for a second season on Netflix?
Man, Josh Hartnett has had one hell of a week in Netflix’s newest suspense thriller Below.
All the poor bloke was trying to do was save his hometown from being wiped off the map, only to find himself dealing with a giant squid that had no intention of making things easy whatsoever. And just when we thought his Calvin Penney could put his feet up and enjoy a bit of peace, the finale chucked another mystery his way. Honestly, the man needed a break desperately!
Netflix’s six-part supernatural thriller, created by Jesse McKeown, takes us to Snook’s Arm, a small fishing town in Newfoundland, where the locals are offered hefty payouts to pack their bags and relocate. And initially, it seems like a good deal because the fishing industry is down bad, and while some residents are willing to take the money, Calvin (Hartnett) wants absolutely none of it. The thing is, he has a lot of PTSD from having lost his father during a previous relocation, and moreover, he doesn’t want to leave the place where he spent forty years.
But while all of this is happening in the town, a mysterious iceberg turns up in the harbour, people start falling ill, and something enormous begins attacking boats. Marine researcher Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis) gets involved, and before anyone can make sense of what’s happening, the town is caught up in a nightmare involving a giant squid with a serious grudge against anyone who comes near its eggs.
Now, a sensible person would think six episodes would be enough to deal with it, right? Well, not according to that ending, because although Calvin manages to save Snook’s Arm, he and his family discover a whole line of mysterious icebergs stretching across the horizon in the final moments. And after knowing what was hiding inside the first one, you can’t be blamed for wondering whether there’s more coming our way
So, will Below return for season two? Sadly, Netflix hasn’t announced another season, and before you start getting your hopes up, there’s a catch.
You see, the platform has labelled Below a limited series, which suggests the story was designed to wrap up within its six episodes. That would normally be enough not to raise the questions of another season, but Netflix has been known to change its mind, so we wouldn’t go writing the show’s obituary just yet.
The latest testament to this is The Beast in Me? The Claire Danes-led psychological thriller was introduced as a limited series, but Netflix went ahead and announced a second season recently. So it looks like Netflix can change its mind.
Of course, Below has only just arrived, and Netflix hasn’t given us any reason to believe another season is being discussed, but with those icebergs in the finale, the writers have left themselves to lure Netflix into another season.
