Why you should be excited for the ‘Kennedy’ family’s arrival on Netflix

Netflix is taking its production lineup to the next level with a new eight-episode drama series, Kennedy, that unpacks the most deep-seated truths about one of America’s most iconic lineages.

Two-time Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender has been roped in to star in Kennedy as Joe Kennedy Sr, the patriarch of the family. Sam Shaw serves as the showrunner and an executive producer.

The upcoming series is inspired by Fredrik Logevall’s book, JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century, 1917-1956, and takes place long before a Kennedy finds themselves housed in the White House. Set in the 1930s, Kennedy follows Joe Sr, his wife Rose, and their nine children as they begin catching the eye of a nation.

Speaking of his forthcoming project, Shaw told Tudum, “The story of Kennedys is the closest we have to American mythology – somewhere between Shakespeare and The Bold and the Beautiful. But Fredrik Logevall’s stunning, nuanced biography pulls a veil on the human strivings and burdens behind the myth, revealing as much about our present moment, how we got here and where we’re going, as about the Kennedys themselves.” So, if that makes you curious, here’s an overview of what more to expect from Kennedy.

What is the plot?

Kennedy pulls back the curtain on the lives, loves, enmities, and tragedies that moulded the most legendary dynasty of modern history. The series takes place in the 1930s, and the first season covers the unexpected rise of Joe, Rose Kennedy, and their nine children, including their defiant second son, Jack, who’s facing difficulty finding his way out of the shadow of his golden boy older brother.

Who is in the cast and crew?

In addition to Michael Fassbender, who portrays the head of the unravelling family, Joe Kennedy Sr, Laura Donnelly stars as Rose Kennedy in the Netflix series. Nick Robinson as Joe Kennedy Jr, Joshuah Melnick as Jack Kennedy, Ben Miles as Eddie Moore, Lydia Peckham as Rosemary Kennedy, Saura Lightfoot-Leon as Kick Kennedy, Cole Doman as Lem Billings, and Imogen Poots as Gloria Swanson round out the cast.

Besides Sam Shaw, Thomas Vinterberg serves as an executive producer who will also direct the first and last episodes of Kennedy. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping, and Kaitlin Dahill executive produce for Chernin Entertainment. The executive producer list also consists of Eric Roth, Fredrik Logevall, Lila Byock, Anya Epstein, Dustin Thomason, and Anna O’Malley.
