Why you should be excited for Netflix’s ‘Pride and Prejudice’ adaptation
The highly anticipated adaptation of Jane Austen’s timeless Pride and Prejudice is coming to life on Netflix this year. And after long months of waiting, Netflix finally unveiled the much-awaited first glimpse into the six-part series, chronicling the Regency-era romance of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy for a new generation.
Directed by Euros Lyn and written for the screen by bestselling author and screenwriter Dolly Alderton, Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice closely follows the original source, bringing together a promising cast.
In a conversation with Netflix, Alderton spoke of the adaptation, saying, “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story, and I feel lucky that I get to be a part of it.” Plus, since the novel is nothing short of a “blueprint for romantic comedy,” it’s no wonder that viewers, in turn, hold as much hope in the retelling.
So, if you’re an Austen fan or someone who simply wants to turn back time to have a taste of old-school love, here’s an overview of everything you should know about Pride and Prejudice.
What is the plot?
Pride and Prejudice is an upcoming six-episode adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1813 novel, which tells the story of Elizabeth Bennet as she navigates the societal pressures of Regency England, shaping her own individuality in a dysfunctional family. The series focuses on her union with the unlikely bachelor, the seemingly cocky Mr Darcy, who ends up making and breaking Elizabeth’s lasting prejudice at the same time.
The series simultaneously follows the Bennet sisters, exploring the complexities of family, love, friendship, and society, while highlighting and reintroducing characters generations have grown up reading about.
Who is in the cast?
The Bennet sisters will be played by Emma Corrin, Freya Mavor, Rhea Norwood, Hopey Parish, and Hollie Avery in the Netflix version of Pride and Prejudice. Meanwhile, Olivia Colman and Rufus Sewell complete the family, portraying Mrs Bennet and Mr Bennet, respectively. Jack Lowden portrays Mr Darcy in the forthcoming series, and the cast also includes Jamie Demetrio as Mr Collins, Daryl McCormack as Mr Bingley, Louis Patridge as Mr Wickham, Siena Kelly as Caroline Bingley, Fiona Shaw as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, and Anjana Vasan as Mrs Gardiner.
