Why you should be excited about the Chinese fantasy drama, ‘Agent from Above’

After what feels like forever, the greatly anticipated Chinese-language production, Agent from Above, originally announced in 2019, before the COVID-19 lockdowns, is finally preparing to touchdown on Netflix this week.

Although the adaptation has faced several hurdles along the way, including the pandemic pause and a lengthy post-production process, the intrigue surrounding Agent from Above hasn’t faded even a bit, which is no surprise considering it is one of Netflix’s most expensive Chinese-language productions ever.

By now, Netflix viewers have made peace with the fact that good things take time, and Agent from Above’s long-awaited arrival this week is proof.

What is the plot?

Based on popular Taiwanese author Teensy’s novel series, The Oracle Comes, Agent from Above is an upcoming Netflix series that entwines traditional Taoist folk and mythology with modern urban fantasy. The fantasy drama follows psychic Han Chieh, who is coerced into serving the Third Crown Prince to compensate for a devastating mistake made while young.

Han is tasked with resolving supernatural threats that plague the human world, and to succeed in the mission, he eventually joins forces with optimistic collegegoer, Yeh Tzu, and a detective gifted with the rare ability to see spirits, Chang Min. While their mission is not short of obstacles, nothing compares to the brutal villain Chen Chi-sha, who aims to dismantle the balance between the human and demon worlds.

Who is in the cast and crew?

Kai Ko leads the cast Han Chieh in the Chinese-language production Agent from Above, with Wang Po-chieh portraying the Third Crown Prince. Buffy Chen as Yeh Tzu, Johnny Yang as Chang Min, Hsueh Shih-ling as Chen Wu Tien-chi, and Chen Yi-wen as Chen Chi-sha round out the main cast.

Kuan Wei-chieh and Lai Chun-yu are co-directing the series for Netflix, with Melvin Ang and Rita Chuang serving as executive producers.
