Why do fans believe Steve Harrington could die in ‘Stranger Things’ 5?

The second volume of Stranger Things season five is just a day away. But in the meantime, countless theories are flooding about the Netflix series finale, one of the most eye-grabbing being the possibility of a fan-favourite character’s death: Steve Harrington.

While the idea of one of the main Stranger Things characters dying is not exactly new, what exactly has fans suspecting that Steve could be the one?

Well, all the conjectures began with the Volume Two trailer when the beloved Hawkins babysitter was seen iterating a chilling do-or-die pact with Dustin Henderson, saying, “You die, I die.” But does that foreshadow Steve’s potential sacrifice in the days to come to save his friends, just like Eddie Munson did, leaving the audience with a heartbreak they’re still yet to get over?

Honestly, it’s too early to say for sure. But if Steve doesn’t make it out alive, tears will be shed without a doubt, and perhaps the possibility is enough to spark a major fan outcry.

Although only time will reveal what lies in Steve’s fate at the end of the Upside Down saga, for now, the Duffer brothers’ teasers at The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon have viewers strapping in for the worst.

The co-creators appeared on last Wednesday’s episode, where the host, Fallon, challenged them to give a hint at “how the rest of Stranger Things will go,” using nothing but the Funko Pops figures. And it’s fair to conclude, at least, for now, that things aren’t exactly looking good for Steve. They began by abandoning Barb, who was killed by the Upside Down forces way back in the first season.

“What is Barb doing here, man? Ross Duffer asked. “I know. I feel bad,” Matt Duffer chimed in. Following this, the co-showrunners started assembling the characters squad-wise, starting with Max leading the pack of Vecna’s abducted children, such as Delightful Derek and Holly. Surprisingly or not, Henry and Joyce were seated next to each other, with Will Byers on top of Henry Creel and Vecna atop Will.

While you can also spot Eleven submerged in water, what actually blew everyone’s mind is when the Duffers put Steve’s figure on the edge of the desk. “This is Steve,” Matt Duffer said, leaving Fallon in jaw drops. But then, he dismissed everyone’s clear-cut worries, saying, “He’s fine, he’s fine.” And then came Ross Duffer, sliding the character a little closer to the edge, to the point that the figure fell off the desk.

“There it is! That’s how Stranger Things ends,” Fallon exclaimed, and safe to say, all our collective heartbeats actually hit a halt. The teaser was completely wild without a doubt, but now it remains to be seen, whether it actually holds true for Steve’s destiny in the hit Netflix series.
