Where was ‘Too Much’ filmed?
Too Much touched down on Netflix and left viewers feeling a mixed bag of emotions. Despite banking on a tried-and-tested rom-com trope, Lena Dunham brought a fresh take with the series. But in the process of balancing and subverting the genre, the creator wove a narrative that paid homage to Hollywood’s most iconic rom-coms, infusing settings and real locations with a life of their own.
The result was a cinematic love letter to cities rich in nostalgic charm and familiarity. Every frame felt like a warm hug, inviting viewers to step into a world of love, laughter, and oddities. The rom-com Easter eggs were sprinkled throughout the narrative, and the footprints took viewers from New York City to London. According to Will Sharpe, who plays Felix in Too Much, “London feels like a character in the show”.
And it does. Jessica comes to London with a head full of dreams, Anglophile expectations, and baggage from the previous breakup, as if the city is itself a healer. When London is explored from Jessica’s point of view, it signifies the start of something new. “But you also see the kind of scuzzier reality of the city,” Sharpe pinpoints. In fact, the show was shot in several places throughout England.
The scenes in Jessica’s apartment were filmed in St Peter’s Estate in Hackney, quite a far cry from the Jane Austen dreamy estates. And when she meets Felix in the bathroom stalls, that’s The Ivy House in Nunhead. Her disorienting, dream-like experience in episode five at the donkey fest was shot at Hackney City Farm. As for the big fat wedding that became a turning point in their relationship, it was filmed at Englefield Estate Hall, which is where The Crown and Black Mirror were also shot.
Chugging along, the train Felix boards to go to his family home is in Hayes, West London, whereas the flashbacks of his childhood home were in Oxfordshire, South East England. Another iconic place where Jessica met Wendy is supposedly a café on Lauriston Road in Victoria Park, which is one of the oldest and largest park in London. Speaking of exes, Felix’s former girlfriend, Polly, who becomes a friend, lives in De Beauvoir Town.
And the Christmas advertisement in which fans see Rita Ora took place at the Village of Hambledon. But that’s not all. Too Much was also filmed in Parliament Hill, Regent’s Canal in Maida Vale, Shoreditch Town Hall, Hoxton Square, Shoreditch High Street, Dash The Henge in Camberwell, Soho, Notting Hill, on the London Bridge, and the Tower Bridge.
The New York roadmap for the show is rather brief, more like drops in the bucket in comparison to England. Jessica and Zev’s apartment is in Brooklyn, and her office is on Broadway and Canal Street in Manhattan. However, Too Much was also filmed in the park and around the borough in Brooklyn.
