Netflix has a reputation for knocking it out of the park. But most recently, Netflix joined forces with NASA, which means the streamer won’t rest until it makes an out-of-this-world digital age. With Netflix and NASA+ live programming’s team-up, streaming days are clearly about to be a bit more otherworldly. But before that happens, how about an interstellar voyage with Netflix with the ultimate space movie, Oxygen?

The Netflix space library is no less than an astronautical odyssey. But if we were to pick a favourite from the list of Netflix Original Productions, the crown would most probably go to Oxygen, the 2021 sci-fi psychological thriller. Directed by Alexandra Aja, best known for his work in Piranha 3D and Crawl, Oxygen had an incredible critical response.

But what exactly makes Oxygen stand out? The thriller is set in a unique premise and takes place entirely in space. However, the focus is on an airtight cryogenic medical unit and inside it is trapped a woman who has absolutely no memory of who she is or how she got there in the first place. As the oxygen levels start dropping fast, with the assistance of an advanced AI, MILO, AKA Medical Interface Liaison Officer, she transmits outside the pod to reach out to the emergency services.

Although MILO assists Hansen in gathering clues and articles to trigger her memory senses, it declines to open the cryo unit without an administrator code. Oxygen stars Mélanie Laurent in the lead role as Elizabeth “Liz” Hansen, with Mathieu Amalric and Malik Zidi delivering incredible performances in supporting roles. The gripping plot unfolds with time, but from the start, the sense of urgency is felt loud and clear.

Aja confined Laurent to a small space to tell most of the story. But Oxygen excels with its attention to detail. At every kerb, there’s an unexpected twist awaiting. And despite falling into the genre of space-themed movies, it deviates curiously to bring a distinct viewer experience. It uniquely blends sci-fi, thriller, and drama to delve deep into themes of survival and humanity. The Netflix track record is proof enough that fans love a good survival drama.

Fortunately, Oxygen doesn’t disappoint. Those who are claustrophobic should keep a weather eye open because Aja hasn’t compromised in any aspect, not even in the visual storytelling. The narrative is crafted meticulously to keep viewers on their toes at all times. Oxygen is dynamic, in the moment, and once you hit the play button, you cannot put it down.

Oxygen has been one of the most celebrated space titles on Netflix that keeps viewers engaged long after the credits roll. This Netflix film understands the assignment unlike films where suspense is lost despite an initial hold. Sure, it’s unsettling. But that’s what gets you going.
