What you need to know about ‘The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson’

Netflix is revisiting a heartbreaking true crime in its new documentary, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson, originally announced earlier in March.

The Netflix documentary captures the rapid ascent of the North American off-road cycling prodigy in the world of cycling, whose dreams were cut short by the most tragic incident in 2022.

Releasing on Netflix this week, The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson had a promising festival run, including a premiere at the 2026 SXSW Film & TV Festival in the Documentary Spotlight category. While Unreasonable Studios produces the documentary, Emmy-winning Marina Zenovich directs, and Academy Award-winning Evan Hayes produces.

As for what more to expect from The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson, here’s a breakdown of everything you should know before hitting the play button.

What is the documentary about?

The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson tells the story of Moriah “Mo” Wilson, a cycling star who had a bright future ahead of her. She was raised in Vermont, and before relocating to the West Coast to work as an engineer for Specialised Bicycles, Wilson was an alpine skier at Dartmouth College. While she was initially into local bike racing, she soon turned out to be a formidable endurance athlete.

Wilson even left her engineering job to focus entirely on racing, winning cyclocross, gravel, and mountain biking, including the 2021 Big Sugar Gravel, the 2022 Sea Otter Classic XC race and Belgian Waffle Ride. Despite everything, the risks, the hard work, the leaps, life, unfortunately, had other plans.

When she was in Austin, Texas, in May 2022, to compete at Gravel Locos, Wilson was killed. The crime sent shockwaves throughout the cycling world, resulting in a weeks-long pursuit for her killer, Kaitlin Armstrong, before being ultimately caught and sentenced to 90 years imprisonment in 2023. Although the global manhunt and the trial were all over the headlines, the Netflix documentary focuses on Wilson’s story and that of those she left behind.

Who is featured in the documentary?

The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson is a 95-minute documentary, coming soon to Netflix, packed with emotional interviews with Wilson’s friends, family, and colleagues, who each tell their side of the story, detailing the impact of the crime and how it reshaped their worlds.
