What to know about the Chinese fantasy drama, ‘Veil of Shadows’

In a move probably no one really saw coming, Netflix just acquired the international streaming rights to the fantasy-wuxia epic Veil of Shadows.

Despite being originally conceived as a YOUKU exclusive, the 29-episode series will be released on Netflix over the next few weeks and months. But the best part is that some of the early episodes are already streaming now.

In the last few years, Netflix has scooped up several Chinese-language productions through licensing, expanding its library of non-English-language dramas and subsequently finding groundbreaking success. As a result, it’s no wonder that the streaming giant wishes to carry on that very road.

So, if you were missing out on just the thing in your watchlist, here’s everything you should know about Veil of Shadows.

What is the plot?

Veil of Shadows is a Chinese fantasy drama series, written and directed by Edward Guo, that tells the story of the youngest nine-tailed fox, Lu Wu Yi, from the organisation Wu Xiang Yue, who is on a quest to find the magnanimous demon, Xiao Wei. Determined to succeed in her mission, she impersonates a priest to enter Wei Manor in Luo’an, only to find that many others are on the manhunt for Xiao Wei, including a resentful demon, Wu Shi Guang, her sly nine-tailed fox sister, Wu Wang Yan, and an ingenious priest with an elusive past.

Everyone has their sights set on the Dragon Deity’s powers, but somehow, all of their grounds are different. Some want to harness the power to protect and shield, while others want to increase the body bags.

Who is in the cast?

Veil of Shadows brings together several genres, like romance, martial arts, fantasy, and magic, shaping up to be a complete package. And to bring this package to life on screen, the series has cast four main leads – Ju Jingyi as Lu Wu Yi/ Di Zhu / Jiu Ying, Joseph Zeng as Wu Shi Guang/ Cang Hao, Chen Duling as Wu Wang Yan/ Qing Yi, and Tian Jiarui as Ji Ling/ Man Man/ Long Shen.

The additional cast includes Yan An as Li Jie, Rao Jiadi as Yu Sheng Wei, Gao Jiatan as Luo Wei, Zuo Chenyi as Wei Qing, Omid as Wu Zhi Qi, Cao Yuchen as Pian Pian, and Jasper Ou, among many others.
