What to know about Netflix’s upcoming documentary ‘The Carman Family Deaths’

Netflix is getting its ducks in a row for a new chilling documentary on the platform this November, The Carman Family Deaths, and it’s unlike anything viewers have heard before.

Directed by Yon Motskin, The Carman Family Deaths takes spectators to the devastating September of 2016 when 46-year-old Linda Carman set sail for an overnight fishing trip from South Kingstown, Rhode Island, with her 22-year-old son, Nathan. Following a failed contact with a friend the next day from Linda’s end, the two were reported missing, resulting in an extensive Coast Guard search for about 62,000 nautical square miles.

Eight days later, a passing freighter saw Nathan Carman floating alone in a life raft around 100 miles south of Martha’s Vineyard. Although he could be saved, Linda was never found. Amid Nathan’s recovery, he told a devastating story of survival at sea and was in shock at the loss of his mother. But discrepancies in his account were observed by investigators and relatives.

Nathan was reportedly diagnosed with autism early in his childhood. As a result, his detached demeanour was confusing for the investigators. To worsen it all, it all boiled down to another mysterious family history as Linda’s millionaire father was found killed in his bed. Nathan was allegedly the last person to see him alive. As for what to expect from The Carmen Family Deaths, here’s a detailed overview of all you need to know.

What is the documentary about?

The Carman Family Deaths looks into Linda Carmen’s disappearance in 2016 and the subsequent rescue of her son, Nathan Carman. The documentary then follows the widespread investigation that entwined Nathan with the unsolved murder of his grandfather, John Chakalos. It features family archive footage, interviews, and expert testimony, exploring the opinions and narratives around the 22-year-old’s actions and his “possible accountability in the deaths of his mother and grandfather.”

About Nathan Carman

Nathan Carman was born to Linda and Clark Carman in 1994. He was the first grandson of his millionaire grandfather, John Chakalos, a real estate developer, which automatically makes him a favoured heir. Prolonged tensions and reports of abuse in the house also stemmed, meaning Nathan’s childhood was scarred by instability, despite the financial privilege.

Following his autism diagnosis, he also had a hard time befriending people, but was allegedly close to a horse named Cruise. When an adult, Nathan had to move back and forth, bouncing jobs and houses. However, he was pretty close to his mother, Linda. But after her disappearance, he was put in a tight spot, caught in the crossfire of two overlapping investigations, one about his mother and the second about his grandfather’s murder.

Who is interviewed in the Netflix documentary?

The Carman Family Deaths feature interviews with Nathan’s father and Linda Carman’s former husband, Clark. It also includes interviews with one of Linda’s sisters, investigators from the Coast Guard, local authorities, and the FBI. Journalist Evan Lubofsky also sheds light on the case alongside insights from friends and relatives who weigh in on the longstanding tensions within the family.
