What to expect with ‘Squid Game’ season three?
With Squid Game, Netflix did not just gamble; it played a high-stakes game of survival, revealing the primal truth that beneath the veneer of civilisation, humanity’s most ancient instincts still lurk. From its daring dissection of capitalism’s dark underbelly to its masterful use of symbolism, Squid Game has cemented its place as a show that cuts to the very marrow of existence.
The first season catapulted it to the pinnacle of non-English language series, and the second proved that the game’s deadly allure still has a fatal grip on audiences.
Now, with the final curtain call looming with season three, the world holds its breath: what could go down in Squid Game this time around?
When will Squid Game three be released?
Scheduled to be released on June 27th, 2025, the countdown has officially begun to Squid Game season three. Most recently, the streamer released new pictures of Lee Jung-jae, who portrays Gi-hun, and Lee Byung-hun (Front Man), alongside other characters from the upcoming instalment. It goes without saying that the next season will pick up right where season two left off. There, viewers were witness to Gi-hun and Front Man’s brutal face-off.
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed in a letter to fans, “The fierce clash between the two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3.”
What happened in Squid Game season two?
Before jumping on the bandwagon to season three, here’s a recap of what went down in the last one. By the end of the second lap, Gi-hun had lost all his friends in the deadly rebellion. Not only so, but his dreams of taking over the guard now seem derailed forever. Gi-hun’s loss, according to the director, was actually twofold. Firstly, he failed to persuade fellow players to stop the game via voting, causing a mental breakdown and then his physical attempts to go up against the hosts also backfired.
But with such a suspenseful cliffhanger, the question that floated every mind was about Gi-hun’s fate. In Squid Game season three, Gi-hun will be pushed to his limits and put in a tough spot. He must make a choice since Squid Game “stops for no one.” This time, the games are about to get deadlier than ever. Each new round is a prophecy of the grave consequences awaiting the players.
Simultaneously, Front Man is prepping to welcome the enigmatic VIPs while his brother Jun-ho remains on his quest for the elusive island, oblivious to a mole. Squid Game season three will reveal whether Gi-hun makes the choices that pay off or make him pay dearly instead. Netflix rolled out a trailer for the upcoming instalment in which Gi-hun was back in the dorm after the crushed uprising.
What have we seen of the new season?
In the fleeting glimpses, players return to compete in a gameplay that is more cutthroat than ever, VIPs return to the fold, and all hell breaks loose. Viewers have noted that the gap between seasons two and three is much smaller than before. The first and second were rolled out almost three years apart. Squid Game’s second instalment hit Netflix shelves on December 26th, 2024. Now, exactly six months later, season three is fanning the flames for the finale.
Squid Game series director and writer Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed previously that seasons two and three were written as one continuous story. However, the episode count prompted a split into two, allowing a quicker release for the final season.
