What is the story behind the Netflix Brazilian thriller, ‘Radioactive Emergency’?

The Netflix library is currently glowing with several new arrivals. But the title sparking an unavoidable buzz at every step is the intense new Brazilian thriller, Radioactive Emergency.

Created by Gustavo Lipsztein and directed by Fernando Coimbra, Radioactive Emergency, released on March 18th, is a five-episode limited series based on terrifying true events.

Despite being available on streaming for roughly a week, the show’s gripping premise has clearly caught every eye. And it is definitely not without reason.

Inspired by the real-life 1987 incident in which two thieves stole an unsecured radiotherapy machine in Goiania, Brazil, oblivious to the danger inside, Radioactive Emergency, the Netflix thriller, details that the machine was broken in an attempt to sell the scrap and make money out of it. But upon breaking it, they discovered a shiny, blue, powdered substance, which they then showed to their friends and family out of intrigue.

As it turns out, the glowing substance was Caesium-137, a highly potent radioactive chemical, incredibly harmful to anyone who comes into contact with it. After the mysterious illness started plaguing the entire city, doctors investigated the unprecedented situation, isolating the cause as radioactive waste.

The Brazilian thriller Radioactive Emergency captures the chaos that followed as panic spread sooner than they realised. Experts from all over the country were summoned to help prevent further contamination and solve the immediate nuclear crisis at hand, as tensions rose between locals and politicians, with everyone seeking someone to blame and no one willing to take any.

The tragedy resulted in four deaths, with over 100,000 people tested for radioactive poisoning. Radioactive Emergency is not only inspired by true events but also by the experiences of first responders, doctors, and nuclear physicists who raced against time to contain the unprecedented damage.

The five-episode thriller presents multiple accounts and perspectives to offer viewers a full picture of the three-and-a-half-month-long nightmare triggered by one simple theft.

While, of course, the clamour that has followed Radioactive Emergency’s arrival is completely organic, now that most of you know the devastating true story that inspires the tale, we hope that even those yet to catch up will do so soon.
