What is the real story behind Netflix’s ‘A Friend, a Murderer’?

Last week, Netflix rolled out a three-part true-crime documentary, A Friend, a Murderer, and ever since, the Internet hasn’t been able to rest.

Directed by Christian Dyekjær, A Friend, a Murderer is a spine-chilling docu-series on Netflix featuring interviews with three former friends of the perpetrator who rocked the tight-knit community in Denmark, a local priest, a volunteer search coordinator, a journalist, and the founder of a Danish Facebook group about people who’ve disappeared.

A Friend, a Murderer recounts the three chilling cases that sent Denmark into alert, forcing a Danish community to live under the fear of the perpetrator roaming free at large. The cases took place between 2016 and 2023, when attacks on teenage girls were reported, but it was only after the third incident that the perpetrator was finally caught: 32-year-old Philip Patrick Westh.

A Friend, a Murderer is packed with details about the horrifying cases that rocked the rural community, detailed by the culprit’s former friends and those closely involved in the case. “I have seen how the local community was struck by fear, grief, anger, and suspicion,” says local priest Anna Helleberg Kluge, who is interviewed in the Netflix documentary.

“No one knew who they could trust, and many lived with a quiet, constant fear in their everyday lives. But I have also seen small signs that the community can find its way back – people can support one another and slowly move forward after the unimaginable.”

Meanwhile, one of Westh’s former friends said in the documentary, “For years, I feared the perpetrator was still out there, and I could be the next victim. When I realised it was one of my closest friends, my world shattered.”

Following Westh’s arrest in 2023, he partially pleaded guilty to charges related to the 2023 abduction. However, he pleaded not guilty to the previous incidents for which he was charged. He was found guilty in a jury trial and sentenced to life in prison in June 2024.

Westh’s lawyer eventually initiated an appeal, which was set to take place in the fall of 2025, but Westh ultimately didn’t go through with it. As of now, he’s serving a sentence in Denmark. So, if you still haven’t checked out his story and his terrifying trail of crimes, A Friend, a Murderer is currently streaming on Netflix. Watch now!
