'Wednesday' star Jenna Ortega leaves hit Netflix show ahead of new sequel series

Wednesday star Jenna Ortega has surprised audiences of one of her most popular Netflix shows after a trailer was released revealing her character to be killed off in the first ten seconds.

The actor, who is currently filming Wednesday series two, was expected to play an integral role in the forthcoming series Jurassic World: Chaos Theory, scheduled for release later this month. However, the teaser shows that the character she voices, Brooklynn, will not be playing an integral role in the story.

Jurassic World: Chaos Theory follows its popular predecessor, Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, which ran for five seasons between 2020 and 2022. While it has been confirmed that Ortega’s character will not be returning, members of the original cast reprising their roles include Paul-Mikél Williams, Sean Giambrone, Kausar Mohammed and Raini Rodriguez.

Ortega’s recent rise to fame could likely be a factor that explains her decision to step back from the series as she films for a new series of Wednesday, scheduled for release this year. She also recently starred in Miller’s Girl, which is stirring a significant amount of controversy relating to her and her co-star Martin Freeman’s age-gap.

In the movie, Freeman plays a teacher who becomes intimately involved with an 18-year-old school girl, played by Ortega, leading many to criticise its subject-matter and label it as inappriopriate.

Freeman has since defended the movie, however, calling it “grown up and nuanced”, adding, “It’s not saying, ‘Isn’t this great?’”

He also alluded to the negative connotations movies often get before people have taken the time to sit with its content. To illustrate his point further, he posed the question: “Are we gonna have a go at Liam Neeson for being in a film about the Holocaust?”

The film’s intimacy coordinator Kristina Arjona also defended the choice, assuring viewers that Ortega was “comfortable” during the sex scenes.

Speaking to The Daily Mail, she explained: “There was many, many people throughout this process, engaging with [Ortega] to make sure that it was consistent with what she was comfortable with, and she was very determined and very sure of what she wanted to do.”
