‘Wednesday’ season two finale ending explained: does it look good for anyone?
If the first part of Wednesday’s second season was shocking, the second part had the shock factor on steroids. The Netflix instalment was a complete paradox of learning and unlearning.
The first part went overboard to bring many characters back from the dead, to some extent or another. By the time they pulled the curtain, the body count was twice as much. Wednesday season two concluded with the Addams family‘s daughter hopping into Uncle Fester’s motorcycle hack to track down Enid Sinclair, now a full alpha werewolf in the North.
Meanwhile, Tyler Galpin, AKA the Hyde, forged an unforeseen alliance with Isadora Capri. But the biggest eyebrow raiser wasn’t any of this. It was Wednesday, finally getting hold of Aunt Ophelia Frump’s journal, resulting in a psychic vision that’s enough to inform that not only is she alive, she’s confined to a dark room, which turns out to be Grandmama’s basement.
The season ended with Ophelia scribbling on the wall, “Wednesday must die”, leaving a crumb so gripping that it convinces fans to watch out for season three. But before that happens, let’s get into the details of everything that dropped jaws this time, with an overview of how it ended.
What’s up with Aunt Ophelia?
Aunt Ophelia’s absence didn’t bother viewers before the second season of the hit Netflix series. But when the conversations finally began sprawling, she was apparently “missing” throughout. As it turns out, she’s very well alive. And if anyone knows her whereabouts, it’s her mother, Hester Frump.
Episode eight unveils that Ophelia is locked in Hester’s house in one of the spooky rooms. Wednesday doesn’t reveal how long she had been or who put her there. But one thing is clear: she isn’t a fan of Wednesday Addams, her niece and fellow Raven.
Does Ophelia’s journal mean anything to Wednesday?
Morticia Addams has always been protective of Wednesday. During the first part of the black comedy series, she burns Goody Addams’ book of spells to guard her. But when she finally gifts Ophelia’s journal to Wednesday, it’s a cue that she’s finally coming to accept that her daughter is growing up.
Are Wednesday’s psychic abilities back?
One of the biggest thunderstrikes from the first part of Wednesday’s season two was the mysterious loss of her psychic abilities. When part two kicks off with ex-Principal Weems as Wednesday’s spirit guide, she reveals that the outcast had abused her psychic abilities way too much, resulting in their partial loss. Jenna Ortega weighs in on Tudum, “She had gotten really good at using her psychic ability. But then she abuses it and uses it too much and ruins it for herself”.
According to Miles Millar, Wednesday’s vision of Ophelia means the abilities “have been somewhat restored”. As he puts it, the restoration is a reflection of the character’s growth. She had already realised she cannot be all-controlling and that her fragmented bond with her mother is not exactly working in her favour. So, when she and Morticia have a moment of their own, it’s an evolution of their relationship. Millars suggests this alone offers the possibility that her powers could return in season three.
What happens to Enid Sinclair? What is an alpha werewolf?
Enid Sinclair somehow transformed into her werewolf version without a full moon in episode six. While that should have excited her, Capri came with an alarming warning: Enid has the signs of an alpha werewolf. The facts that she couldn’t wolf out for the longest time, and when she did, it was a blood moon, connect the dots.
An alpha wolf is an extremely mighty creature who is feared by other forms of werewolves. They often live a life of seclusion. The season finale showed her evolution into an alpha werewolf, who saves Wednesday once again from being buried by Isaac Night. Although she spent the entire season finally getting to be a part of the pack, this twist makes one wonder what awaits her relationships now that she’s an alpha.
Can Wednesday save Enid?
Wednesday’s part two confirms that the transformation into an alpha werewolf is actually irreversible. They cannot return to their human forms. Yet, knowing all the risks, she goes all out to save Wednesday. “Wednesday and Enid had some ups and downs this season, but that moment of pure sacrifice is a really great climactic moment for Enid’s arc this season,” Millars explains.
With the help of Agnes DeMille, Wednesday leaves to find Enid at the season’s end. Although it remains to be seen whether she can save Enid, she surely isn’t taking the journey for nought.
What is Isaac and Francoise’s story?
If Wednesday season two teaches us anything, it’s that living as a Hyde is basically knocking on death’s door. This is why, years before Wednesday, Nevermore student and scientist Isaac Night built a machine in Iago Tower to save his Hyde sister, Francoise. He asked his roommate Gomez Addams to help him power it with his electrical power. While Gomez was happy to help, what Isaac hid from him was that the experiment would mean his death.
Young Morticia saved Gomez but destroyed the machine, which ultimately killed Isaac. And for those wondering how his story matters, remember Slurp? Well, with the help of quite a few Jericho brains, he finally regenerates into his form. With Francoise out of the Willow Hill Psychiatric Facility’s LOIS programme and Tyler free as well, the Night family finally reunites.
Although Tyler is made to believe that the other two want to remake the machine to let Francoise live, he discovers in the season finale that it was meant to eliminate his Hyde abilities forever. While Francoise came up with the plan to save Tyler, for him, it was nothing less than betrayal that assured his mother’s death.
What’s Wednesday’s motive behind saving Tyler?
When Isaac needs an Addams to save Tyler, he kidnaps Pugsley. Determined to destroy the machine a second time, Wednesday takes the lead. Once she’s around the clock tower, she cuts Tyler’s restraints. “I missed” was her only explanation. According to Millars, the step could have been strategic to buy more time to save her brother. But does it have anything to do with Tyler? We’ll probably get the answers in the next instalment.
What is the origin of Thing?
Wednesday’s season finale was full of twists and turns. By far the best was the Night family secret that Thing is Isaac’s right hand, which Morticia cut off before he died to reanimate it. Isaac reveals that Da Vincis are practically “nothing” without their right hands. So, upon getting Wednesday to come to the woods, he kidnaps Thing to reattach it to his body.
But it isn’t easy to return to his entire form. With the Addams family begging for Thing’s return, they enter into a kerfuffle where Thing has the last laugh. If it weren’t for Thing, Isaac would still be alive. Not only does it take out his clockwork heart, killing him, but he also finds its own identity.
Does Tyler die?
Tyler doesn’t die, but he has another loss to confront, that of his mother, Francoise. He kills her in the Hyde confrontation at the tower. When he goes to Francoise’s grave, Capri offers a “support system of Hydes”. It’s so far hidden that no one can really track them. And the best part? They don’t need “mothers and masters”.
But when she reveals her father, too, was a Hyde, it makes one want to question whether she truly has only good intentions for Tyler. Only time will tell.
Is Principal Dort dead?
Principal Dort was shady from the very beginning, and episode seven finally confirms it. He’s the leader of the Morning Song cult who entered Nevermore to steal Hester’s wealth and vanish into thin air. While his exploitation of Bianca Barclay was visible from the start, once it became clear that he was the one who kidnapped her mother, too, he ended up abducting the former.
Ajax went the extra mile to save her from his grasp, using his Gorgon power to transform Dort into a stone. But the chandelier came crashing down, ultimately killing him in a heartbeat.
Who is the new Nevermore principal?
With Dort dead and Weems settling in the afterlife, Alred Gough promises the new leader of Nevermore will leave the audience “very surprised”.
Is Weems gone?
Weems announces her plans to take a “sabbatical” as Wednesday’s spirit guide. But Gough teases, never say never.
Is it okay to trust Grandmama Hester?
Well, with Aunt Ophelia’s secret still shrouded in mystery in Grandmama Hester’s house and her resentment towards Gomez, it’s safe to say there’s a lot to look forward to in season three. So, save some room for questions because this is clearly not the end of the Addams family’s revelations.
