‘Wednesday’ season 2 tops the Netflix chart despite an alarming dip from first part

Wednesday took a real leap of faith, dishing out a two-part release on Netflix for season two after a three-year gap.

As if the wait between the seasons wasn’t enough to test everyone’s patience, Netflix went overboard with another one-month gap to roll out the second part, leaving fans frustrated, concerned, and lamenting.

While the second season reached the summit of the top ten charts with the debut of part two, opening to 28.2million views in the first five days on Netflix, Wednesday simultaneously lost momentum. The first part of the second season amassed 50million views in the same time period during its August release, marking a 43.6% dip in viewership in part two (via Variety).

The debates and discussions were endless about whether Wednesday could have benefited at all from the two-part release. However, considering the statistics contain the date of the first five days, the black comedy series has plenty of time to turn the tide in its favour. Despite the reported dip in viewership, the second season is currently the number one show in 81 whopping countries!

Several factors could trigger the decline, including audience fatigue, potential loss of momentum, lack of awareness, or simply an aversion to non-continuous storytelling. It’s also just as possible that many fans were saving the two-part release to watch the entire season at once. Meaning, the next few days are crucial to understand the audience’s response.

While that’s just a speculation trail, it remains unclear what exactly caused the drop in viewership. But knowing Wednesday’s contemporary fan following, the content they delivered in season two, the fact that it’s still leading the chart board, and they have a third season confirmed, Netflix has kept the hopes high for their child of woe.

The first season of Wednesday stays true to the mark. It’s still the most popular show of all time, ahead of Adolescence and the fourth season of Stranger Things. With 252.2million views amassed, even the frenzy of the second has permeated the first as it’s currently ranked sixth in this week’s top ten most popular series on Netflix.
