‘Wednesday’ renewed for third season and spin-off in the works
Netflix‘s popular series, Wednesday, might soon have a spin-off series, those close to the show reveal, as the show’s renewal for a third season is officially announced.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Alfred Gough hinted at a spin-off series in a new interview. “It’s something we’re definitely noodling; there are other characters we can look at,” Gough said. Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria added to the conversation, remarking dubiously, “There’s a lot to explore in the Addams Family.”
The new series will launch in two parts. The first four episodes will be released on August 6th, and the final four will be released on September 3rd, exclusively on Netflix. Tim Burton will direct half of the second season, as he did with the first.
When talking about the series back in 2024, Ortega mused: “I think everything’s bigger. It’s a lot more action-packed. Each episode will probably feel a little bit more like a movie, which is nice.”
In a new interview with Jenna Ortega and Burton, Ortega discussed the nuances of the titular character. “The great thing about the Wednesday character is she’s constantly making societal remarks and just kind of degrading the public,” Ortega said cheekily.
However, Ortega has hinted before about her desire to explore different characters. She considered the juxtaposition of being an adult woman, playing a teenage character, stating, “It’s always been really annoying, because you just don’t feel like you’re being taken seriously,” she said. “You know, it’s like how you’re dressed in the schoolgirl costume. There’s just something about it that’s very patronising.”
Nonetheless, Wednesday’s story expands beyond the perimeters set by her school in the first season. A new trailer clip teases greater roles for the Addams family characters and a new supernatural mystery, centred around bone-chilling, lifelike dolls. Ortega’s schoolgirl character must stop a monstrous killing spree that has terrorised the town, and solve a mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago.
