‘Wednesday’ creators reunite for an adult animated series, ‘Grim,’ at Netflix

Netflix is bringing back the incredible duo of Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the creators and executive producers of its most popular English-language series, Wednesday, for Grim, an adult animated series.

According to an exclusive Deadline report, the upcoming series will be based on Boom! Studios’ horror-fantasy comic books by Stephanie Phillips and Flaviano.

Gough and Millar have helmed Grim as executive producers, which is currently in the works. Also joining the dynamic duo on this venture is the supervising director of Netflix’s fan-favourite adult animated series, the Emmy-winning Love, Death + Robots, Jennifer Yuh Nelson.

Grim is a character-driven supernatural story which follows a newly hired Reaper, Jessica Harrow, who’s now responsible for carrying souls to the afterlife. In contrast to her fellow Reapers, Jessica, however, has no clue or memory about her life before death or how she even died. As she digs deeper for answers, she finds herself more entangled in the cobwebs of the never-before-seen architectures of the afterlife, revealing concealed forces, cosmic skeletons, and her unimaginable connection to Death itself.

Gough and Millar are executive producing the adult animated series for Millar/Gough Ink, along with the company’s Head of Film, Aaron Schmidt and Yuh Nelson. Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin executive produce on behalf of Boom! Studios with Mette Norkjaer co-executive producing. Also among the executive producers for Grim are Phillips and Flaviano.

Grim has marked its place in popular culture for its genre-defying mythology and visual framing. It debuted just three years ago, in 2022, but rapidly evolved into a cultural phenomenon, becoming one of the highest-selling launches in Boom! Studios’ history. The 25-issue run came to an end this month.

Boom Studios!, which was founded in 2005, has launched several comics that have eventually been acquired for TV series adaptations. One of the most recent examples is Butterfly, available on Prime Video, starring Daniel Dae Kim, which debuted in August.

Gough and Millar are best known for creating and executive producing Netflix’s hit dark comedy series, Wednesday. The first and the second seasons remain the number one and number four titles on the most popular English series chart to date, respectively. Their credits include WB/CW’s Smallville, AMC’s Into the Badlands, and MTV’s The Shannara Chronicles. They have also written and produced Spider-Man 2, Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. WME and Gendler Kelly & Cunningham represent them.

Coming to Yuh Nelson, she directed several episodes of the dystopian adult animated series Love, Death + Robots. She started at DreamWorks Animation and was the Head of Story on Kung Fu Panda. She also directed Kung Fu Panda 2 and Kung Fu Panda 3, becoming the first woman to solely direct an animated feature for a high-profile studio, which bagged her an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Animated Feature Film’ for Kung Fu Panda 2. WME, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Hansen Jacobson Teller represent Yuh Nelson.
