‘Wayward’: The unreleased Netflix limited series with 89% on Rotten Tomatoes
The limited series format has evolved into a big hit on Netflix, and the 77th Primetime Emmys made it all the more evident with Adolescence winning not one or two, but eight awards on the prestigious night.
As Netflix doubles down on the category with back-to-back original productions, another limited series, still waiting in the pipeline, has turned heads with a jaw-dropping Rotten Tomatoes score: Wayward.
Despite being due for a September 25th premiere, the forthcoming sci-fi horror series has already debuted with a strong 89% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics. Starring Mae Martin and Toni Collette, Wayward has received promising initial approval ratings from nine reviews, with eight echoing in its favour and one, not so much. Once the series is released on Netflix, the ratings are potentially subject to change since it still lacks the audience’s score.
By the looks of it, the appetite for Netflix’s small-town mysteries is far from waning. Comedian, musician, and actor Martin has created this genre-defying limited series, in which he stars as Alex, and Wayward also stars Sarah Gadon and Patrick J Adams, best known for playing Mike Ross in Suits. The upcoming limited series takes place in the town of Tall Pines, centring the troubled teen industry where nothing is what it seems from afar.
Every household is drowning with its own fair share of secrets, which are anything but ordinary. Wayward follows police officer Alex and his pregnant wife, Laura, after they move into their new home in the small town as the former connects with two troubled teens attempting to flee. The official logline teases, “As Alex begins investigating a series of unusual incidents, he suspects that Evelyn, the school’s mysterious leader, might be at the centre of all the problems”.
Speaking of Wayward to Tudum, co-creator Ryan Scott said, “I wanted to explore why one generation always ends up hating the next. We were all teenagers once (or still are), and then we slowly transformed into adults who forget. Wayward is about this metamorphosis.” In essence, the upcoming series is about those who put up a fight to let their teenage selves go and about those who get lost in the momentum of adulthood just as easily.
Netflix already dropped a haunting trailer for Wayward last month on August 28th, sending chills down every spine. While it was already on its way to earning a sinister reputation, the Rotten Tomatoes pre-debut score now officially makes it a must-watch.
