Watch ‘Wanted’ before it leaves Netflix tomorrow
The Netflix alarms have started ringing for the projects that are about to leave Netflix this week. But in case you’re struggling with what to watch as the time runs out, make sure to save a day for Wanted.
The action thriller is currently counting its last days on the streamer as it’s slated to depart from Netflix on October 16th. So, you’d better act fast if you don’t want to wait for another streaming giant to pick it up for a rewatch.
The 2008 action thriller is loosely inspired by Mark Millar and JG Jones’ comic book miniseries, star-studded with Hollywood veterans like James McAvoy, Morgan Freeman, and Angelina Jolie. Currently boasting a 71% Rotten Tomatoes score, Wanted is practically craving for the attention of viewers before the clock signals its departure.
Wanted is the perfect watch for those seeking an adrenaline rush and hard-hitting action as a punchfest that has stood the test of time. It tells the story of a Chicago-born Wesley Allan Gibson, making ends meet at a desk job, whose professional and personal lives are both stuck at a dead end. Having succumbed to panic attacks from the constant overbearingness of his tough boss and his abusive girlfriend, it almost seems like there’s no turning point left in his life.
But that’s only until he meets Fox, who reveals the true identity of his recently killed father. Fox brings information that he’s not exactly prepared for, telling him that his father was a secret assassin, working as a member of the Fraternity, which is a clandestine society of assassins. And to make things worse, she also admits that the killer, Cross, who murdered his father, is now tailing him.
Although Wanted variably differs from the superhero mythos of the original series, the darkness of the content was visibly borrowed, making it a must-watch film of its time. The action thriller was a massive commercial hit, grossing $342.5million against a reported budget of $75million. Directed by Timur Bekmambetov, Wanted boasts a unique kinetic visual style, capitalising on slow-motion sequences to enhance the cinematic experience.
But what hits the chord the most is the high-octane stylisation of action sequences, which are often physics-defying, and yet, a flashy treat to the eyes. The core premise might be unoriginal. However, Wanted takes the concept to new heights with a plot twist that doesn’t disappoint. If anything, it serves as a great cinematic escape for the days when you don’t just want to feel the rush but also witness it. The action thriller is currently streaming on Netflix US. If you plan to catch up with it, make sure you do it before Thursday.
